1780rif. 1019Y9A Londres : Not Stated 1780. Leather. Good. 5" by 3". None. An unauthorised pocket-sized London edition of Cantos I-XI of Voltaire's scandalous satire famously banned throughout the 18th century in Europe. A privately published London edition issued in the original French being an example of the many unauthorised editions of this poem that circulated around Europe throughout the 18th century. Volume I of II only comprising Cantos I-XI. With woodcut head and tail pieces and an engraved headpiece for each canto. Collated against an octavo copy held by the Hathi Trust and lacking a frontispiece. La Pucelle d'Orleans The Maid of Orleans is an epic and controversial satire concerning the life of the not-yet-canonised Joan of Arc. Though Voltaire published an authorised edition Geneva 1762 which stripped most of the "bawdy" and anticlerical passages the uncensored poem circulated throughout the banned regions making it one of the most widely read texts concerning the figure for several centuries. In full speckled calf binding gilt to the spine and black morocco spine label. Retaining the original half title and original blanks with marbled endpapers. Certainly one of his more contentious works Voltaire supposely wrote La Pucelle after a literary colleague challenged him to compose a better analysis of the Joan of Arc subject than Jean Chapelain had done in the mid-17th century. In full speckled calf binding gilt to the spine and black morocco spine label. Externally with rubbing to the extremities most notably to the spine. With a few faint marks to the boards. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with the odd spot. Stains to the reverse of the marbled free endpapers. Tide marks to the upper margins of the first few leaves. Good Not Stated hardcover
