1756ref. 775R67Not Stated: Not Stated 1756. Leather. Very Good. 7" by 4.5". None. An early English edition of Voltaire's history of the 1741 war bound in smart contemporary leather. ESTC Citation No. T137624.Detailing the war of 1741 between the Hats of Sweden and Russia which resulted in Sweden losing more land to Russia.Voltaire never willingly published this work; the manuscript of the first book was 'stolen' and published under his name in Amsterdam in 1755. Interestingly he never elected to publish his complete copy of the work instead publishing selected parts of it in his 'Collection Complete des Oeuvres de Voltaire'.Voltaire 1694-1778 was a French writer and historian active during the Enlightenment. He was a proponent of freedom of speech and outspoken against Christianity and the Roman Catholic Church. He was an especially prolific writer with his works spanning poetry novels essays histories and plays across over two thousand books and pamphlets. He was also extremely influential on historiography.Published in 1756 this edition was published by the manuscript thieves with no publisher or place of publication stated.A fascinating work. In a full calf binding. Externally generally smart with a little rubbing to the spine and a chip to the head of the spine. Extremities are a little bumped. Contemporary ownership inscription to the front endpaper. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with just the odd spot. Very Good Not Stated hardcover
1768ref. RMP785>8º. 8 317 p. 7 p. Belisaire; 89 p. L'Homme aux Quarante Écus cuatro planchas grabadas.
