1764Best.-Nr. 192458London: Printed for T. Becket and P. A. de Hondt 1764. Freedom of religion First edition in English of this seminal argument for toleration encapsulating Voltaire's famed campaign to secure posthumous justice for Jean Calas. Voltaire argues that tolerance was in line with natural law just and required by a proper understanding of Christianity. The Protestant merchant Jean Calas 1698-1762 was executed by a Toulouse court after having been found guilty of murdering his son to prevent his conversion to the Catholic Church. Voltaire saw the case as straightforward religious mania and campaigned energetically to prove the anti-Huguenot bias of the local judges. His Traité sur la tolérance was first published in 1763 the year after Calas's execution. This English translation was undertaken by William Kenrick 1729/30-1779 the chief reviewer for London's Monthly Review. His rendition of Voltaire's prose has been described as "unusually talented" by the standards of Grub Street ODNB. The year after this translation was published Louis XV removed the chief magistrate and had the case retried by another court. Calas was posthumously exonerated and his family paid 36000 francs. Octavo 197 x 126 mm pp. viii 247 1. Contemporary sprinkled calf spine decorated in gilt and with red calf label. With 20th-century bookplate of the Virginia historian Christopher Clark Geest. Simplicity and lucidity coupled with lively malice and sarcasm First edition in English of Voltaire's incisive exposition of his intellectual project his largest and yet also his most accessible philosophical work structured as a collection of 73 short essays. The Dictionary "consists largely of attacks on religious dogma; at the same time it shows the author's abhorrence of falsehood obscurity and oppression and is written with simplicity and lucidity coupled with lively malice and sarcasm. It was at once ordered to be burnt at Geneva and was subsequently 1765 condemned by the parlement and by Rome" Harvey & Heseltine p. 209. The work was first published in 1764 in Paris. ESTC identifies two editions printed in London in 1765: the other which appears to be a paginary reprint of this edition was done for Thomas Brown. No priority has been established.

1751Best.-Nr. 2359The first edition of Voltaire's brilliant historical study of the age of King Louis XIV. Begun as early as 1732 Voltaire sent a manuscript version to Frederic II who was enthusiastic and encouraged its publication. In 1739 Voltaire published a 'Plan Raisonné' of the project including two finished chapters but this was condemned by the court and seized. In 1750 Voltaire left France for Frederic's court at Berlin where he set himself to complete the work. Failing to obtain the 'privilège royal' or even the non-written 'permission tacite' he decided to go ahead and publish the work in Berlin at his own expence. Voltaire continued to add to the work in subsequent editions most notably in the 1753 Berlin edition where he added a supplement in which he refuted the attacks made by La Beaumelle. The gilt too is bright and has been rubbed away only partially on the raised bands; it remains fully present everywhere else. The bindings are tight and hinges firm and a few pages remain unopened.
