1764Best.-Nr. 192458London: Printed for T. Becket and P. A. de Hondt 1764. Freedom of religion First edition in English of this seminal argument for toleration encapsulating Voltaire's famed campaign to secure posthumous justice for Jean Calas. Voltaire argues that tolerance was in line with natural law just and required by a proper understanding of Christianity. The Protestant merchant Jean Calas 1698-1762 was executed by a Toulouse court after having been found guilty of murdering his son to prevent his conversion to the Catholic Church. Voltaire saw the case as straightforward religious mania and campaigned energetically to prove the anti-Huguenot bias of the local judges. His Traité sur la tolérance was first published in 1763 the year after Calas's execution. This English translation was undertaken by William Kenrick 1729/30-1779 the chief reviewer for London's Monthly Review. His rendition of Voltaire's prose has been described as "unusually talented" by the standards of Grub Street ODNB. The year after this translation was published Louis XV removed the chief magistrate and had the case retried by another court. Calas was posthumously exonerated and his family paid 36000 francs. Octavo 197 x 126 mm pp. viii 247 1. Contemporary sprinkled calf spine decorated in gilt and with red calf label. With 20th-century bookplate of the Virginia historian Christopher Clark Geest. Light wear front and rear joints split at foot minor damp staining to contents and small worm track to 19 leaves and rear free endpapers not touching text: a very good copy. ESTC T137894. unknown

1923Best.-Nr. 55063Paris: René Kieffer 1923. Near fine. Lavish limited edition of this landmark in speculative fiction with rich images hand-colored in pochoir in Hémard's characteristic 1920s style - and an original drawing by him. In this conte philosophique originally published in French in 1752 Voltaire uses a fantastic voyage in the tradition of Jonathan Swift to satirize life on planet Earth. The title character a giant named Micromegas who lives on a planet near Sirius is banished in Voltairean style for writing a book that "was condemned by judges who had never read it." He journeys with an inhabitant of Saturn through our solar system; together their observations emphasize the smallness of Earth compared to the vastness of the universe and man's folly in believing himself to be at its center. This playful 1920s edition beautifully printed on French handmade paper lusciously bound by Kieffer and vividly hand-colored is a particularly fitting production for a modern take on Voltaire's satire. 9.75'' x 6.25''. Bound by the publisher Kieffer in elaborately stamped red leather with design after Hémard gilt-lettered spine original wrappers bound in. Illustrated by Hémard with pochoir vignettes throughout. Text in French. 54 2 pages. Limited edition of 500 copies this one of 45 on vélin paper and with an original drawing by Hémard. Bookplate to front pastedown Barcelona-based bookseller ticket to rear pastedown. Lightest sunning and rubbing to spine else fresh bright clean. René Kieffer unknown
