1784Best.-Nr. 191724Kehl: De L'imprimerie de la Société Littéraire-Typographique 1784-89. Canonizing Voltaire an enterprise on the eve of Revolution The first complete collection known as the "Kehl" edition for the small German town in which it was printed to avoid French censorship. After his death the Société Littéraire Typographique was founded there dedicated to the monumental effort of disseminating Voltaire's work through a definitive and typographically magnificent edition. The group of Enlightenment intellectuals ready to champion the author were led by Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais who financed the operation and the Marquis de Condorcet who acted as chief editor. For the first time Voltaire's correspondence was published and commentary and a biography by Cordorcet was added. For the type Beaumarchais bought John Baskerville's apparatus from his widow. This coupled with the unprecedented price he paid for the rights the paper mills he purchased and the cost of setting up in Kehl bankrupted Beaumarchais. Nevertheless he concluded "Europe will be satisfied". Octavo 70 vols 213 x 134 mm. Portrait frontispiece engraved plates. Contemporary mottled calf signed by François Gaudreau at foot of spines red morocco labels double gilt fillet to compartments and boards marbled endpapers varicolour bookmarkers. Superficial splits and worming to joints still very firm occasional wear contents largely clean. A very good set. hardcover

Best.-Nr. 117621Glasgow Printed by Robert Urie 1759. . Fourth edition; 12mo 18 x 10.5 cm; a little toned front hinge reinforced; contemporary tree calf contrasting red morocco lettering-piece to spine joint and headcap repaired slightly scuffed and rubbed very good; 6 3-149 13pp. An early Glasgow printing of this interesting outsider's take on English society and its people precipitated by Voltaire's exile to Great Britain in 1726. The resulting Letters first published in 1734 following his return to Paris express his great admiration for the comparative religious freedom enjoyed by England's Quakers and Socinians as well as its constitutional monarchy 'where the Prince is all powerful to do good and at the same time restrain'd from committing evil' the implication being that England could provide a model for France's reform p.53. When the French edition was published the following year without the approval of the royal censor as Lettres Philosophique it caused a storm with copies confiscated and publicly burnt and Voltaire again forced to flee Paris. The work remains one of Voltaire's most widely known and read texts which helped introduce Bacon Locke and Newton to Europe's Enlightenment thinkers. It also contains an early account of Newton's famous discovery of gravity passed on to Voltaire by Newton's niece Catherine Barton as well as an early translation into French verse of Hamlet's soliloquy from Act 3 Scene 1: 'Demeure il faut choisir & passer à l'instant / De la vie à la mort ou d l'Etre au neant.' p.173. Widely ranked as Voltaire's most important early philosophical work and 'the first bomb hurled against the Ancien Régime' Babson. ESTC T137639. Glasgow, Printed by Robert Urie, 1759. unknown
1761Best.-Nr. 186427London: Printed for J. Newbery R. Baldwin W. Johnston; Printed for S. Crowder T. Longman J. Wilkie; Printed for G. Kearsley; Printed for J. and H. L. Hunt 1761-1824. His oeuvre in English for the first time First collected edition of Voltaire's works in English. This first collection did not include two works but this handsome set makes up the omission. It includes uniformly bound copies of the first English translation of The Age of Louis XV and the second English edition of Voltaire's Philosophical Dictionary. In the early 1750s editions and translations of Voltaire's works multiplied rapidly. Following his earlier surge of fame in the late 1730s driven largely by his plays and his Life of Charles XII publishers eventually produced a full English edition of his writings. This thirty six volume collection was issued between 1762 and 1765 under the direction of Tobias Smollett. Lowndes however notes that Smollett lent his name to the project but took little active part in its translation. A final volume appeared in 1770 although in this set it is represented by a later edition dated 1781. 44 vols duodecimo 170 x 109 mm. Engraved frontispieces with tissue guards to 32 vols. 2 folding plates to vol. 26 folding map to vol. 29. 1923Best.-Nr. 55063Paris: René Kieffer 1923. Near fine. Lavish limited edition of this landmark in speculative fiction with rich images hand-colored in pochoir in Hémard's characteristic 1920s style - and an original drawing by him. In this conte philosophique originally published in French in 1752 Voltaire uses a fantastic voyage in the tradition of Jonathan Swift to satirize life on planet Earth. The title character a giant named Micromegas who lives on a planet near Sirius is banished in Voltairean style for writing a book that "was condemned by judges who had never read it." He journeys with an inhabitant of Saturn through our solar system; together their observations emphasize the smallness of Earth compared to the vastness of the universe and man's folly in believing himself to be at its center. This playful 1920s edition beautifully printed on French handmade paper lusciously bound by Kieffer and vividly hand-colored is a particularly fitting production for a modern take on Voltaire's satire. 9.75'' x 6.25''. Bound by the publisher Kieffer in elaborately stamped red leather with design after Hémard gilt-lettered spine original wrappers bound in. Illustrated by Hémard with pochoir vignettes throughout. Text in French. 54 2 pages. Limited edition of 500 copies this one of 45 on vélin paper and with an original drawing by Hémard. 1734Best.-Nr. 189026London: Jacob Tonson 1734. Later edition of Voltaire's national epic from the library of Francis Hutcheson the 19th-century rector of Donaghadee and grandson of the Enlightenment philosopher of the same name with his engraved bookplate on the front pastedown. The elder Francis Hutcheson was a direct contemporary of Voltaire: both were born in 1694 and came of age as the War of the Spanish Succession was ravaging Europe. Both men had key works published in London in 1728: Voltaire then living in Pall Mall published a lavish subscription edition of the Henriade while Hutcheson then in Dublin published the first edition of his Essay on the Nature and Conduct of the Passions and Affections. La Henriade itself was consciously developed as a national epic for France in the mould of Virgil and Homer. For his hero Voltaire selected the religious moderate Henry IV celebrating his efforts to balance Protestant and Catholic interests. The work was first published in 1723 but despite the 1728 subscription edition the first translation into English did not appear until 1732. Octavo 161 x 104 mm pp. xx 245 1 99 1. Octavo bound in full modern morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe / Zaehnsdorf with gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands gilt ruling to the front and rear panels all edges gilt gilt turn-ins and inner dentelles marbled endpapers with black and white illustrations. One of 1500 numbered copies this is number 500. In fine condition. Illustrated by Sydney Joseph. One of the most influential thinkers of the French Enlightenment François-Marie Arouet know by the nom de plum Voltaire was a resourceful and prolific writer. His works touched nearly every literary form including plays poems novels theoretical essays and scientific treatises. A forthright and candid advocate of civil liberties he frequently criticized the institutions of religious dogma and classism prevalent in 18th century France often doing so through satire to avoid censorship and imprisonment. Candide has ranked as one of the world's great satires since its first publication in 1759. It concerns the adventures of the youthful Candide who in the course of his travels in Europe and South America saw and suffered such misfortune that it was difficult for him to believe this was "the best of all possible worlds." Indeed it seemed to be quite the opposite. In brilliantly skewering such naïveté Voltaire mercilessly exposes and satirizes romance science philosophy religion and government — the ideas and forces that permeate and control the lives of men.
