ref. elala6183Paris: Librairie D’Architecture De Bance 1856. First Edition of this description of the famous medieval landmark written by its most ambitious restorer Eugène Viollet-le-Duc and the historian and archaeologist Ferdinand de Guilhermy. Viollet-le-Duc who was then just thirty years old began work on the project together with Jean-Baptiste-Antoine Lassus in 1844. The restoration of the building which had fallen into serious disrepair over time was to last twenty years. The present work retraces the history of construction and details every architectural and structural element. The Commission on Historical Monuments approved most of Viollet-le-Duc's plans including his proposal to recreate the original medieval spire and bell tower over the transept which had been removed in 1786 because it was unstable in the wind. The new spire was taller more ornate and more strongly constructed; it was destroyed by fire in 2019 although the copper statues and ornaments were saved having been removed for cleaning. Supervising a large team of sculptors glass makers and other craftsmen and working from drawings or engravings Viollet-le-Duc remade or added decorations if he felt they were in the spirit of the original style. In total the restoration of Notre Dame cost over 12 million francs. 12mo. pp. 4 p.l. 132 4ads. with half-title. 2 engraved plans & 3 engraved plates. with tissue guards. A very nice copy in contemporary quarter morocco gilt back bookplate partially removed from front paste-down. elala6183 Paris: Librairie D’Architecture De Bance, 1856 unknown

1875ref. 027999Boston: James R. Osgood and Company 1875. Hardcover. Poor/No Jacket. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. vi LACKS pp. vii-xx 1 which includes part of the introduction the table of contents and the list of plates 517pp. This missing text can be viewed online at the Hathi trust website. Translation and with an introductory essay by Henry Van Brunt. Illustrated with plates and woodcuts. This volume contains all called for 18 fold-outs and 110 figures black and white line drawings. Concerning the fold-outs one admits to several short closed tears at blank extremities and a couple of others that admit to a mild wrinkling appearance also at blank extremities. Bound in original green cloth with gilt lettering and decorations to spine and gilt decoration to front cover. There is also a blind decoration to back cover. Volume admits to several small bumps to extremities which are also quite worn. Some general rubbing to remainder of cloth which is a little heavier on parts of joints and a few other places at exterior. Minor spotting and light soiling to exterior which generally maintains much of its original charm. A little heavier but not terribly offensive soiling to a small number of pages ~10 and to edges of pages. Some tanning to paper though this isn't offensive either. Binding is generally firm though starting a bit with some separation to front hinge where missing text was and with several minor tears to paper over back hinge. Text clean. Overall this remains a good sound clean user friendly copy James R. Osgood and Company hardcover
