1684rif. 1018H30Oxford: L. Lichfield for Anthony Stephens 1684 . First edition. Leather. Good. 7" by 4.5". None. A very scarce first edition in English of Creech"s Theocritus with Rapin"s influential discourse on the pastoral tradition illustrated with an engraved pastoral frontispiece. In a contemporary calf binding rebacked with later calf. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece. Collated complete. First edition in English of Thomas Creech"s translation of Theocritus prefaced by his translation of René Rapin"s influential Discourse of Pastorals. Thomas Creech 1659-1700 was among the most active English classical translators of the Restoration period best remebered for his popular translation of Lucretius for which he received a Fellowship at Oxford. Theocritus the Sicilian Greek poet of the third century BCE is traditionally regarded as the founding figure of bucolic or pastoral poetry. These Idylls helped establish a literary tradition of the pastoral later developed by Virgil and generations of European writers. An interesting example of Restoration engagement with the Greek classics. In a contemporary calf binding rebacked with later calf. Externally generally smart. Slight rubbing and bumping to extremities. Rubbing to boards resulting in minor surface loss. One or two light scratch marks to calf. Hinges strained but holding. Front free endpaper almost fully detached holding at upper extremities only. Rear free endpaper partially detached to upper extremities with loss to lower corner. Rear pastedown lacking exposing the underlying board and calf to edges. Pages characteristically age toned more so to first and final leaves. Light tide marking and soiling with the odd handling mark to fore edge of first and final few leaves. Slight cockling to leaves. Good L. Lichfield for Anthony Stephens hardcover

1713rif. 4638London: Printed for E. Curll 1713. ii iv 60 105 3 4 ads frontispiece. Bound without the portrait of Creech found in some copies. Contemporary Cambridge-style panelled calf red morocco label. Lightly toned some soiling. Extremities rubbed a few scrapes joints cracking at head of spine. The first edition of Creech’s translation of Theocritus by the famously unscrupulous publisher Edmund Curll following its 1684 Oxford first appearance. Curll’s edition was reissued in 1721 with a cancel title-page suggesting that it did not sell as well as Curll may have hoped. The BL copy has two engraved portraits one of Creech and one of Theocritus but the copies in Leeds and Oxford appear to have only one so it may have been issued thus. ESTC T138189. Printed for E.
