One of a very few surviving copies of this bookseller's catalogue of a significant portion of the library of Friedrich von Schiller 1759-1805 the German poet philosopher historian and playwright. In 1851 the bookseller and auctioneer Stargardt acquired this part of Schiller's library from his son Karl. It proved difficult to sell and in 1859 he produced the present catalogue selling the collection in 1860 to the Hamburg bookseller I.S. Meyer. Meyer also had difficulties selling the collection and in 1862 he held a lottery which was won by a merchant named Helmcke who received the 156 books and the manuscript list as his prize. Helmcke gave the collection to the Hamburger Stadtbibliothek in 1867 where it was absorbed into the general collections and the duplicates dispersed. In 1905 the remaining 114 volumes were reassembled and shelved separately. The engraved folding plate is a facsimile of a manuscript list of the books in Schiller's hand. Printed in five colors by Harold P. McGrath on Mohawk Letterpress paper in Van Dijck type. The hand composition was executed at the Press by P. Chase Twitchell with calligraphy by Yvette Rutledge of Hayward California. Bound by David Bourbeau at the Thistle Bindery in Barcham Green Dewint paper over boards the front cover embossed with the title design and lettered in gilt the rear cover similarly embossed and lettered in blind; beige cloth endpapers. A mint copy. Housed in the original beige cloth clamshell case the lower corners slightly bumped. A very fine copy in a near fine clamshell case. Moser's Wonderful Wizard of Oz is among the most imaginative productions of the Pennyroyal Press. Rather than attempting to imitate W.W. Denslow's celebrated illustrations for the 1900 first edition Moser created an entirely new visual interpretation of Baum's story through sixty-two finely worked wood engravings combining traditional book illustration with distinctly contemporary imagery and satirical allusion. Moser deliberately populated Oz with visual references to twentieth-century American life and politics. As he later explained: "Few texts lend themselves to contemporary parody as well as does the Wizard of Oz." Having previously portrayed Richard Nixon as Humpty Dumpty in his Through the Looking-Glass Moser found in Baum's story an even broader opportunity for political and cultural satire directing what he described as "humorous but none-the-less serious darts" at the Reagan administration corporate America and the Moral Majority. Among the most celebrated examples is his transformation of the Wicked Witch into Nancy Reagan. The photographs vividly demonstrate the range of Moser's conception: the familiar inhabitants of Oz are transformed into startlingly individual characters while other illustrations introduce consciously modern elements into Baum's fantastic landscape. The resulting book is not simply an illustrated edition of Baum but a distinctly 1980s reinterpretation of an American classic. Laid in is the separately published companion pamphlet: Barry Moser Forty-Seven Days to Oz: A Chronicle of the Studies for the Illustrations for The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. West Hatfield: Pennyroyal Press 1985. First edition. Octavo 9 x 6 inches; 229 x 153 mm. 32 pp. The pamphlet provides Moser's own day-by-day account of the creation of the sixty-two illustrations. As he explains in his Author's Note the text was taken directly from the day book in which he recorded the progress of his work making it an especially appropriate accompaniment to the finished volume. The completed book is an impressive example of the modern American private press at its most ambitious: Baum's great American fantasy interpreted by one of the foremost American book illustrators and wood engravers of the late twentieth century conceived illustrated printed and bound as a unified work of book art. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Johann Christoph von Schiller 1759 – 1805 is considered to be one of Germany's most important classical playwrights. During the last seventeen years of his life 1788–1805 Schiller developed a productive if complicated friendship with the already famous and influential Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. They frequently discussed issues concerning aesthetics and Schiller encouraged Goethe to finish works that he had left as sketches. This relationship and these discussions led to a period now referred to as Weimar Classicism. Together they founded the Weimar Theater which became the leading theater in Germany. Their collaboration helped lead to a renaissance of drama in Germany. In September 2008 the German-French TV channel Arte conducted a poll among its viewers to determine the greatest European playwright "King of Drama". Schiller was voted in second place after Williiam Shakespeare. CONDITION REPORT: FINE & UNREAD The spines are square hinges and joints firm and pages tight. Many sections of the volumes are VERY tightly bound and remarkably appear unopened. Multiple leaves are not fully cut and joined together in these sections. The gilding appears to be completely intact. The spines are gently sun-lightened. The volumes show only light rubbing to extremities from minimal shelf wear over the past 120 years. The boards are colorful and clean with sumptuous supple leather. The Aesthetical and Philosophical Essays Volume I has a light red mark on its fore-edge and Volume II of this work has more rubbing than the other volumes so could be considered NEAR FINE. All of the volumes' interiors are clean with bright untoned pages with no writing or foxing or offsetting from the plates. Each volume has a decorative former owner bookplate on the front pastedown. There may be the scarce mark or sign of handling in places. An exquisitely bound and spectacular copy in remarkable condition for 120-year-old volumes in ORIGINAL fine morocco of a limited set of only 150 with stunning-photogravures and exceptional hand-colored frontispieces. A set that any bibliophile and collector of fine antiquarian sets would be proud to prominently display in his or her collection. . Francis A. Niccolls & Co hardcover
