ABOUT THE AUTHOR Johann Christoph von Schiller 1759 – 1805 is considered to be one of Germany's most important classical playwrights. During the last seventeen years of his life 1788–1805 Schiller developed a productive if complicated friendship with the already famous and influential Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. They frequently discussed issues concerning aesthetics and Schiller encouraged Goethe to finish works that he had left as sketches. This relationship and these discussions led to a period now referred to as Weimar Classicism. Together they founded the Weimar Theater which became the leading theater in Germany. Their collaboration helped lead to a renaissance of drama in Germany. In September 2008 the German-French TV channel Arte conducted a poll among its viewers to determine the greatest European playwright "King of Drama". Schiller was voted in second place after Williiam Shakespeare. CONDITION REPORT: FINE & UNREAD The spines are square hinges and joints firm and pages tight. Many sections of the volumes are VERY tightly bound and remarkably appear unopened. Multiple leaves are not fully cut and joined together in these sections. The gilding appears to be completely intact. The spines are gently sun-lightened. The volumes show only light rubbing to extremities from minimal shelf wear over the past 120 years. The boards are colorful and clean with sumptuous supple leather. The Aesthetical and Philosophical Essays Volume I has a light red mark on its fore-edge and Volume II of this work has more rubbing than the other volumes so could be considered NEAR FINE. All of the volumes' interiors are clean with bright untoned pages with no writing or foxing or offsetting from the plates. Each volume has a decorative former owner bookplate on the front pastedown. There may be the scarce mark or sign of handling in places. According to RBH only 4 copies of this printing have appeared at auction in the last 25 years. In her introduction Shelley contextualizes the creation of her tale: "It proved a wet ungenial summer and incessant rain often confined us for days to the house. Some volumes of ghost stories translated from the German into French fell into our hands. 'We will each write a ghost story' said Lord Byron; and his proposition was acceded to" This printing was apparently issued with and without the additional engraved frontis dated 1831. We can only assume that additional copies of the 1831 frontis had finally run out with this printing. OCLC/WorldCat locate 9 copies of the 1839 edition 7 without the engraved frontis and only 2 with.
