rif. 06937West Hatfield Massachusetts: Printed by Harold McGrath at The Pennyroyal Press 1985. Barry Moser's Remarkable Wonderful Wizard of Oz One of the Great Pennyroyal Press Books - Limited to 350 Copies Signed by Moser MOSER Barry illustrator. PENNYROYAL PRESS. BAUM L. Frank. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Illustrated by Barry Moser. With an Appreciation by Justin G. Schiller. West Hatfield Massachusetts: Printed by Harold McGrath at The Pennyroyal Press 1985. One of 350 numbered copies this being No. 153 signed by Barry Moser. Large quarto 12 7/8 x 11 7/8 inches; 327 x 302 mm. 6 blank 5 1 blank 1 1 blank 1 1 blank 3 1 blank 1-7 8-268 1 1 blank 1 colophon 1 blank 8 blank pp. Illustrated with sixty-two wood engravings by Barry Moser. Printed in five colors by Harold P. McGrath on Mohawk Letterpress paper in Van Dijck type. The hand composition was executed at the Press by P. Chase Twitchell with calligraphy by Yvette Rutledge of Hayward California. Bound by David Bourbeau at the Thistle Bindery in Barcham Green Dewint paper over boards the front cover embossed with the title design and lettered in gilt the rear cover similarly embossed and lettered in blind; beige cloth endpapers. A mint copy. Housed in the original beige cloth clamshell case the lower corners slightly bumped. A very fine copy in a near fine clamshell case. Moser's Wonderful Wizard of Oz is among the most imaginative productions of the Pennyroyal Press. Rather than attempting to imitate W.W. Denslow's celebrated illustrations for the 1900 first edition Moser created an entirely new visual interpretation of Baum's story through sixty-two finely worked wood engravings combining traditional book illustration with distinctly contemporary imagery and satirical allusion. Moser deliberately populated Oz with visual references to twentieth-century American life and politics. As he later explained: "Few texts lend themselves to contemporary parody as well as does the Wizard of Oz." Having previously portrayed Richard Nixon as Humpty Dumpty in his Through the Looking-Glass Moser found in Baum's story an even broader opportunity for political and cultural satire directing what he described as "humorous but none-the-less serious darts" at the Reagan administration corporate America and the Moral Majority. Among the most celebrated examples is his transformation of the Wicked Witch into Nancy Reagan. The photographs vividly demonstrate the range of Moser's conception: the familiar inhabitants of Oz are transformed into startlingly individual characters while other illustrations introduce consciously modern elements into Baum's fantastic landscape. The resulting book is not simply an illustrated edition of Baum but a distinctly 1980s reinterpretation of an American classic. Laid in is the separately published companion pamphlet: Barry Moser Forty-Seven Days to Oz: A Chronicle of the Studies for the Illustrations for The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. West Hatfield: Pennyroyal Press 1985. First edition. Octavo 9 x 6 inches; 229 x 153 mm. 32 pp. The pamphlet provides Moser's own day-by-day account of the creation of the sixty-two illustrations. As he explains in his Author's Note the text was taken directly from the day book in which he recorded the progress of his work making it an especially appropriate accompaniment to the finished volume. The completed book is an impressive example of the modern American private press at its most ambitious: Baum's great American fantasy interpreted by one of the foremost American book illustrators and wood engravers of the late twentieth century conceived illustrated printed and bound as a unified work of book art. rif. 05834New York: Grosset & Dunlap Inc. 1973. Marilyn" Norman Mailer's Lavish Tribute to Hollywood's Most Enduring Icon Signed by Norman Mailer and Lawrence Schiller MONROE Marilyn. Marilyn a Biography by Norman Mailer. Pictures by the world's foremost photographers. New York: Grosset & Dunlap 1973. First Edition First Printing Stated. Quarto 10 1/2 x 9 1/4 inches; 267 x 235 mm. 2 signed leaf verso blank 1-270 1 1 blank pp. Photographic illustrations throughout many in full color. Publisher's padded white silk front cover with title in blind spine lettered in blank marbled endpapers. A fine copy. Housed in the publisher's black cloth clamshell case inset photograph on front panel marbled paper lining near fine. A sumptuous and visually arresting tribute to Marilyn Monroe combining Norman Mailer's speculative and highly personal meditation on Monroe's life with one of the richest assembled collections of Marilyn photography ever published. Produced on a grand scale and lavishly illustrated throughout the volume captures the mythic transformation of Norma Jeane Mortenson into perhaps the defining American cultural icon of the twentieth century. Mailer's text - part biography part cultural essay part psychological portrait - deliberately avoids the conventions of traditional biography. As Mailer himself acknowledged much of the narrative was constructed through intuition and imaginative reconstruction creating not merely a life of Monroe but an exploration of celebrity sexuality vulnerability and fame in postwar America. The extraordinary photographic content remains the book's greatest achievement. Drawn from the work of many of the twentieth century's leading photographers - including Richard Avedon Cecil Beaton Eve Arnold Philippe Halsman Bert Stern and Milton Greene - the images chronicle Monroe's evolution from studio contract player to international phenomenon. Together they form one of the most important visual archives devoted to Marilyn Monroe ever issued in book form. This signed limited issue elegantly bound and preserved in its original clamshell case is among the most desirable presentations of Mailer's celebrated Monroe volume - a striking fusion of Hollywood glamour photographic history and American literary celebrity. Bricusse's own memoir provides an interesting parallel to the world represented here. In Pure Imagination he recalls Arthur P. Jacobs formerly Marilyn Monroe's press agent who later became a close professional associate and film producer; Jacobs's What a Way to Go! had originally been conceived as a vehicle for Monroe before her death. Bricusse also worked closely with George Axelrod screenwriter of The Seven Year Itch and Bus Stop two films central to the construction of Monroe's enduring screen image. Marilyn Monroe; born Norma Jeane Mortenson 1926-1962 was an American actress model and singer. Known for playing comic "blonde bombshell" characters she became one of the most popular sex symbols of the 1950s and early 1960s as well as an emblem of the era's sexual revolution. She was a top-billed actress for a decade and her films grossed $200 million equivalent to $2 billion in 2024 by the time of her death in 1962. Long after her death Monroe remains a pop culture icon. In 1999 the American Film Institute ranked her as the sixth-greatest female screen legend from the Golden Age of Hollywood. Nachem Malech Mailer 1923-2007 known by his pen name Norman Kingsley Mailer was an American novelist journalist playwright and filmmaker. In a career spanning over six decades Mailer had eleven best-selling books at least one in each of the seven decades after World War II. Mailer's 1973 biography of Monroe usually designated Marilyn: A Biography was not approached as a traditional biography. Mailer read the available biographies watched Monroe's films and looked at photographs of Monroe; for the rest of it Mailer stated "I speculated." A particularly handsome copy of the deluxe signed issue uniting Norman Mailer's celebrated meditation on Marilyn Monroe with Lawrence Schiller's photographic and editorial contribution - a lavish monument to Hollywood's most enduring icon. Contemporary half calf gilt lettered label on backstrip skillfully rehinged; boards worn title page toned light stain in top margins but generally a sound copy with interesting marks of early provenance see below. § From the library of Lord Dunmore last royal governor of Virigina. A translation of Schiller's Cabale und Liebe by M.G. "Monk" Lewis the author of the Gothic novel The Monk published the year before. The front pastedown bears the ownership inscription of Lady Susan Thorpe dated 1797 her presentation inscription "Her gift to Lord Dunmore 1799" beneath and the Dunmore Library bookplate with shelf mark. The name "Susan" in the same hand appears again at the start of act one perhaps indicating Lady Thorpe read the part of Elizabeth Munster. Given the date of the gift it is most likely the recipient was John Murray 4th Earl of Dunmore the last royal governor of Virginia. Dunmore fled to New York after the burning of Norfolk in 1776. He was later Governor of the Bahamas but lost his post when his daughter eloped with the son of George III. By 1799 he was in retirement in England aged 69. He died in Ramsgate Kent in 1809. Lewis's advertisement for the play merits recording in full: "The following pages contain a Translation of Schiller's" Cabale und Liebe." A Play calling itself a Version of that admired Tragedy has already appeared in England but so extremely ill executed and in so mutilated a condition as to leave scarce a shadow of resemblance between the Original and the Copy. The Author has taken the liberty of omitting whole characters and scenes and in several places has thought proper to substitute his own sentiments for Schiller's; an alteration by which the Piece is very far from gaining. - Lest the present Translation should be mistaken for the former I have thought it right to change the Names both of the Characters and of the Play itself; in every other respect I have endeavoured to keep strictly to the Original: and when I offer my Translation to the Public it gives me some confidence to reflect that although this second attempt may be as bad as the first it is utterly impossible for it to be worse. Hardcover. no dust jacket spine slightly turned light shelfwear to bottom edge small nick in cloth at bottom of front cover; vintage bookseller's label Kendrick Bellamy Denver on rear pastedown. Novel about a career woman a young widow who works as an account executive for a San Francisco ad agency who is sent by her boss for whom she's already set her cap on a working vacation to Baja California to check out the potential of a disused casino being refurbished and turned into a resort. While on this assignment she succumbs to the Mexican way of life falls in love with a local ranch owner and considers throwing it all over to stay down there. Then her boss shows up romantic and professional complications ensue and a hurricane helps them sort it all out. The New York Times critic faulted the book for lacking "that deep below-the-surface quality that might have given reality to her consciously contrived tale. Even the background presented with such earnest attention to detail seems never to lose the aura of travel folder literature." Kirkus Reviews on the other hand found it an "intelligently emotional women's novel" -- so like with most books the only way to find out for sure is to read it yourself. .
