1978réf. 52557Kent: Volair Limited 1978. First edition thus. Quarto. xxviii470pp. 5345pp. Finely gold-tooled leather in original brown cloth slipcase. All gilt edges. Raised bands. Ribbon marker. Silk-moire endpapers. Color frontispiece in Vol. I. Stunningly illustrated work by T. L. McKenney on American Indian Chiefs. Thomas Lorraine McKenney 1785 - 1859 was a United States official who served as Superintendent of Indian Trade and later as Head of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. In the mid 1820's he went West to observe Indian tribes attempting to collect artifacts & portraits of notable native Americans. After this endeavor proved somewhat disappointing he commissioned Charles Bird King 1785 - 1862 to paint portraits of visiting Indian delegates in his Washington studio. The portraits were published in lithograph form in folio format in 1836 - 1844 accompanied with essays & biographies by James Hall 1793 - 1868. Hall was a popular author of Western topics. The spectacular lithographic plates are reproduced in this publication in smaller format. The majority of paintings were done by King some by Peter Rindisbacher 1806 - 1834 as well as some other artists. "For this edition by Volair which makes use of modern reproduction technology the beast features of the folio and octavo editions are combined. The portraits come from an original folio edition published by Frederich W. Greenough 1838-44. A remarkable feature of these portraits is that they include six by the renowned English lithographer Charles Hullmandel. Normally found only in the uncompleted European edition by Campbell these extremely rare lithographs are as follows: War Dance of the Sauks and Foxes Vol. I frontispiece Red Jacket Vol. I pg. 7 Mohongo Vol. I pg. 27 Shingaba W'Ossin Vol. I pg. 151 Pushmataha Vol. I pg. 183 and Kish-Kallo-Wa Vol. I pg. 449.The text of the Volair edition comes from the first octavo edition published by the lithographer J. T. Bowen 1848-50. For some reason Bowen rearranged the sequence of the portraits and biographical sketches. The Volair edition necessarily follows the revised arrangement; the only difference is that it is bound into two volumes instead of three." Minor fraying on slipcase which remains very sound. Books in fine condition as new. Elaborate publication in a stunning binding. Volair Limited unknown

1865réf. W2803Philadelphia: Rice Rutter & Co. 1865. Original hand-colored lithograph by J. T. Bowen after the painting by Charles Bird King. From the final octavo edition published 1865-1870. The image size is approximately 6" by 9 3/4" on a heavy sheet of paper measuring 11" by 7 3/8". The print is in near fine condition: clean and bright with vivid coloring. Toko-see-mathla was a prominent Seminole chief between the first and second Seminole Wars. He was called John Hicks by white settlers He moved his people to the area called Hicksville! that is now Madison County Florida after Andrew Jackson forced them out of the Tallahassee area. Thomas L. McKenney who from 1816 until 1830 headed what was to become the United States Bureau of Indian Affairs commissioned Charles Bird King to paint portraits of Native American delegates visiting Washington D.C. He also had King paint copies of other portraits that had been painted by James Otto Lewis. The result was a gallery of portraits of both great chiefs and lesser personages that was intended to serve as an important part of the historic record of the era. After leaving government service McKenney arranged to have the portraits copied by Harold Inman for the purpose of creating a series of hand-colored lithographs. In collaboration with James Hall McKenney produced the monumental History of the Indian Tribes of North America that included 120 hand-colored lithographs after the paintings of King and Lewis as well as an historical essay by Hall and biographical material on most of the Native Americans pictured. Portions of the folio edition were published by various publishers during the period 1837-1844 and were followed by several octavo editions. Although hailed as an artistic success and an important contribution to Native American ethnology the high production cost of the lithographs and relatively low sales during an economic recession combined to make the venture unprofitable. The less expensive octavo editions were a financially unsuccessful attempt to salvage the situation but still an artistic success. In 1865 a fire at the Smithsonian Institute destroyed most of the original paintings; so the only original pictorial records remaining are the hand-colored lithographs published for McKenney and Hall. They are considered to be one of the high points of 19th century Americana. Original. Single Sheet. Near Fine. Illus. by Charles Bird King. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Fine Art Print. Rice, Rutter & Co.

Kane approached by the Mormon leaders for aide accompanied them on the trek west. Later he was sent by President Buchanan to persuade them to accept federal control over the Utah Territory. "Kane provided the most sympathetic appraisal of the Mormon migration. His account.is unusual well-written. It opens with a vivid account of his arrival in the recently abandoned city of Nauvoo. Repeatedly Kane contrasts the orderly beauty that the Mormons had created with the destruction perpetrated by the patriotic rabble who routed them from their homes. He depicts in particular the mysteriously beautiful temple which the mobe had 'as a matter of duty sedulously defiled and deface'"--Flake. unknown

1846réf. 240091846 Chippewa INDIANS 1ed Thomas McKenney Memoirs Cherokee POCAHONTAS Portrait Thomas McKenney's "Memoirs" is one of the best mid-19th-century accounts of travels among Native American Indians! Published in 1846 "Memoirs Official and Personal" describes McKenney's adventures on the Wisconsin and Mississippi Rivers interactions with the Winnebagoes living among the Cherokee and Creek peoples and his attempts at improving the living conditions of Indians through political persuasion. Note that this first edition contains numerous full-page engravings including the highly coveted hand-colored illustration of Pocahontas! Larned's perspective on this book is important: "McKenney was appointed superintendent of the US trade with the Indian tribes…. He had great faith in the fundamental worth of the Indian and has much to say in regard to the 'abominable abuse of power' of the government with the Indians. In 1826 he made an extensive trip in order to negotiate a treaty with the Chippewa Indians."
