Questo libro di narrazioni polivalenti è iniziato con una semplice premessa: la raccolta di fogli di carta - strappati da libri - con fotografie multiple e narrazioni intrecciate. Nel corso di un decennio di lavoro su altri progetti che prevedevano di separare le immagini l'una dall'altra di eliminarle dalla pagina e di ricontestualizzarle come nuovi insiemi l'artista americana Carmen Winant ha raccolto diligentemente fogli disparati scremandoli da sue altre collezioni in corso. Il libro che ne è scaturito è ampio in termini di soggetti - con fogli che raffigurano uno studio rabbinico l'addestramento di cani il parto chirurgico i metodi del sesso tantrico e diverse tipologie di tramonto - ma specifico nell'approccio e nell'applicazione. Le sue pagine costruite mettono in crisi l'idea di "tema" come motore di un libro assumendo invece l'atto di organizzare sia in pagine distinte che nel loro insieme come soggetto significativo. Il libro ha vinto il Book Award of the Grand Prix Images Vevey 2021/2022 ed è stato pubblicato in occasione della mostra omonima alla Images Vevey Biennial Svizzera del settembre 2022 SPBH Editions / Images Vevey, unknown

Per the 2016 review by PhotoEye the work is named after the 1974 Phillip Roth book of the same title yet "My Life as a Man makes no apparent contextual reference to Roth's book but the cover does appear as a small image multiple times in Winant's book. From the opening sequence which groups an image of a naked woman laying face down on a table under the watchful eyes of a team of male doctors with various other images of men gazing at woman it's clear the work offers a pointed critique of the ways in which the female form and gestures are controlled and imaged." Though the edition size is unstated the work is very rare and each copy comes with a unique collaged image on the cover and a folded poster of nearly completed New York Times crossword puzzles by Winant's mother. réf. 11187Magnum. Description: 6"x 6" limited edition Fuji Crystal Archival Matte paper print. Image size is 5.5" on the longest side and the paper size is 6" x 6". The Print is unique as Goldberg hand-wrote the letters along the lenth of the man's arm making each print similar but nonetheless unique. The print is also SIGNED by Carmen Winanat on the verso. Condition: Brand New/Mint. The prints were issued in an un-numbered Limited Edition limited to the number of prints purchased during the days in which the sale was open to the public. They were then carefully printed to the highest standards and signed by the photographers. As such these are sure to become highly collectible photographs given the provenance linking them directly to the Magnum collective and each of the photographers who chose to participate in the event. L'artista Carmen Winant ha attinto da oltre una dozzina di archivi personali organizzativi e istituzionali di tutto il Midwest in Minnesota Iowa Nebraska Illinois Kentucky North Dakota e Ohio. Le fotografie stesse sono sorprendentemente regolari: le donne rispondono al telefono sterilizzano le attrezzature mediche organizzano feste di compleanno per il personale offrono workshop e fissano appuntamenti. Mettendo al centro gli atti teneri quotidiani e di routine che informano questo lavoro sanitario Winant lavora per contrastare il modo in cui gli attivisti anti-choice hanno armato la fotografia proponendo una visualità che si occupa dell'assistenza all'aborto. The Last Safe Abortion presenta una selezione di questa vasta raccolta di fotografie accompagnata da un testo di Winant.
