Covers show some light rubbing scuffing and discoloration from age. Edges show some fraying rubbing scuffing and light corner wear. Old sticker with previous owner's name on inside of front cover. Pages are browned from age and show some light foxing and additional browning. Hinges on front and back cover show some light tearing and fraying but are still attached. Top side of spine has a tear. With publisher's advertisement on front paste-down 2pp catalogue at end and rear endpaper advertisements. Gaskell's standard 'life' was first published as two volumes in 1857; the subsequent controversy resulted in the work's through revision for the third edition later in the same year. This is almost certainly the fifth edition published in the format of the seven-volume Cheap Edition of the Bronte novels. In this issue the first four volumes together with the second edition of the Poems are advertised on the final leaf and the series as a whole is printed on the rear cover. An excellent Thornton Edition of the Bronte sisters’ opus of gothic novels edited by Temple Scott featuring the detailed biography of Charlotte Bronte by Gaskell uncommon with all volumes in original dustjackets. Charlotte’s “Jane Eyre” and Emily’s “Wuthering Heights” are considered not only the two sisters best works but still central to the English literature canon while Anne’s lesser known Tenant of Wildfell Hall is considered by many as the first sustained feminist novel.
