His continuing interest in the nature of the sympathetic control of cardiac and arterial function led to his definitive work on the anatomy and function of the efferent sympathetic nerves published in 1885 which served as the foundation for all future investigations in this area. His studies also proved the antagonistic cardiac effects of the autonomic nervous system especially the cardioinhibitory role of the vagus nerve and its control of the heartbeat."
