1940rif. 3488The John C Winston Company. Philadelphia. No date Circa 1940's. DJ price $1.50. 1940 Pebbly dark red cloth with front cover title and illustrations embossed in gilt and black. Spine lettering and decoration in gilt. Unpaginated Some 96 pages. Book size about 10 by 8 inches. Stated on the title page: 'With Colored Illustrations After the Original Style'. Illustrated throughout in black/white and color with illustrations after the originals by Hoffmann. Some 37 rhymes in all including: Slovenly Peter; The Story of Cruel Frederick; The Story of the Inky Boys; The Story of Fidgety Philip; The Story of Flying Robert; Tom The Thief; Envious Minny; etc. Purchased with a collection of books from a single owner who had acquired them as a child in the early 1940's I am reasonably certain that this book dates from that period. In a maroon DJ with white lettering and a front cover border of white illustrations. Rear cover has a panel full of information about the book: 'This edition is a faithful copy of the original. Even the pleasing tones of the old hand-colored illustrations have been carefully reproduced so that these 'cheerful stories and funny pictures' can be enjoyed by children today as much as they were by their grandparents'. Book has only the slightest of wear; bit of darkening along the pastedown spine edges from aging of the glue used. DJ is a bit rubbed and edgeworn; small chips at top and bottom of spine. Lovely copy in the scarce priced DJ. NEAR FINE/VERY GOOD- Language: eng Language: eng 0.0 Language: eng Language: eng Language: eng. Hardcover. Fine/Very Good. The John C Winston Company.
