1936réf. 16480n.p.: n.p. 1936. Near fine. Early 20th century printing of this variation on the 'Struwwelpeter' theme targeted to lazy girls who need improving. A Struwwelpeter for girls who refuse to pull up their stockings and stop yawning in public. In verse loosely built on the model of Heinrich Hoffmann's great and terrible classic for wicked German children this didactic picture book tortures its chronically sleepy heroine with kobolds at night beatings by day and dire threats from Knecht Ruprecht at all hours but leaves her alive to pray for God's mercy in the end. A beautiful copy barely touched. 8.5'' x 6.5''. Later edition "Völlig ungekürzte Volksausgabe". Original pictorial cardstock wrappers. Profusely illustrated in color throughout. Ownership inscription to front wrapper verso: "Vienna Summer 1936". Slight edgewear touch of bowing to fore-edge. Pages lightly and uniformly toned. n.p. unknown books

The set is thus complete as issued. . 1404185. Special Collections. Gustav Kiepenheuer Verlag unknown books

Black cloth boards silver lettering on gray title block on spine; bw illustrated dj mylar cover; xvi 476 pp music. "This book contains the first complete translation in English of E.T.A. Hoffmann's major musical writings complementing the well-known Tales. It offers therefore a long-awaited opportunity to assess the thought and influence of one of the most famous of all writers on music and the musical links with his fiction. Containing the first complete appearance in English of Kreisleriana it reaveals a masterpiece of imaginative writing whose title is familiar to musicians from Robert Schumann's piano cycle and whose profound humour and irony can now be fully appreciated. This volume offers translations aiming at the greatest fidelity to Hoffmann as well as musical accuracy in the reviews. David Charlton's three introductory essays provide extensive information on the background to Romantic music criticism; on the origins and internal structure of Kreiseriana; and on Hoffmann and opera. A concluding essay by the late Friedrich Schnapp lists Hoffmann's planned reviews and those mistakenly attributed to him." DJ.
