Johnann Georg Hoyer / Phil. & Med. D. und Pract. in Mühlhausen." "Unter den Chemikern seiner Zeit nimmt Friedrich Hoffmann 1660-1742 eine beachtenswerthe Stellung ein. In der Schule der Chemiatrie groß gezogen eine seiner ersten Schriften "De cinnabari antimonii" 1681 ist noch vollständig im Geiste derselben geschrieben erkannte er sehr bald die ganze Leerheit dieses Systems und seine Bekämpfung desselben wurde um so entschiedener je reichere Kenntniß er sich in der Chemie aneignete; in einer kleinen Schrift "Exercitationes de acidi et vis cidi pro stabiliendis omnium morborum causis" 1689 die besonders gegen den Chemiatriker Bontekoe gerichtet ist legte er einen Absagebrief an diese Schule nieder und benutzte sein chemisches Wissen für die Heilkunde nur noch in der Bearbeitung der Pharmakologie und Balneologie. Er theilte die Mineralwässer nach ihrem chemischen Gehalte in alkalische eisenhaltige Bitterwässer und Koch-Salzwässer vgl. hierzu "Methodus ad examinandas aquas salubres" 1703 und hat von einer großen Zahl derselben besonders von den böhmischen Heilquellen chemische Analysen gegeben. - In der Theorie der Chemie schloß sich Hoffmann wenn auch nicht rückhaltlos der Stahl'schen Lehre vom Phlogiston an in dem empirischen Theile verdankt ihm diese Wissenschaft manche wichtige Erweiterungen und Bereicherungen; er ist u. A. der Erste gewesen der den Nachweis führte daß Bitter- und Alaunerde welche man bis dahin als mit Kalk identische Stoffe angesehen hatte eigenthümliche Körper darstellen."
