Glossy gray and illustrated dust jacket with purple lettering. ix 112 pp. BW illustrations. Thomas Stothard 1755-1834 was probably the most prolific illustrator of his times executing designs for everything from landscape sculpture and history painting to ceramics silverwork and book illustration. The resounding popularity of his art attests to the extent to which his decorative style and sentimental subject matter appealed to a wide range of his contemporaries. The general spread of his fame and the rise of his prices must be measured against this background. His sentimental art is a challenge to the accepted notion that political artists produce only" tough" art. An account of Stothard's life in particular of the special nature of his relation to his employers reveals the increasingly complex role of the artist in an industrial society. Percy Bysshe Shelley was an English Romantic poet whose passionate search for personal love and social justice was gradually channeled from overt actions into poems that rank with the greatest in the English language. Shelley was the heir to rich estates acquired by his grandfather Bysshe pronounced "Bish" Shelley. Timothy Shelley the poet's father was a weak conventional man who was caught between an overbearing father and a rebellious son. The young Shelley was educated at Syon House Academy 1802 - 04 and then at Eton 1804 - 10 where he resisted physical and mental bullying by indulging in imaginative escapism and literary pranks. Between the spring of 1810 and that of 1811 he published two Gothic novels and two volumes of juvenile verse. In the fall of 1810 Shelley entered University College Oxford where he enlisted his fellow student Thomas Jefferson Hogg as a disciple. But in March 1811 University College expelled both Shelley and Hogg for refusing to admit Shelley's authorship of The Necessity of Atheism.
