First published anonymously in London in 1818 Mary Shelley's Frankenstein; or The Modern Prometheus is one of the defining works of English Romanticism and Gothic literature. Begun when Shelley was eighteen the novel transformed the Gothic tradition into a profound meditation on scientific ambition moral responsibility and the limits of human knowledge. Far more than a tale of horror Frankenstein examines the consequences of creation without compassion. Victor Frankenstein's determination to transcend the natural order leads not to triumph but to isolation suffering and loss. The Creature frequently simplified in popular culture remains one of literature's most complex and tragic figures embodying enduring questions of identity rejection responsibility and what it means to be human. The novel was conceived during the celebrated summer of 1816 at the Villa Diodati on the shores of Lake Geneva. Emerging from the intellectual world of European Romanticism it was shaped by contemporary debates surrounding science philosophy education and the sublime. More than two centuries after its first appearance Frankenstein remains among the most influential novels in the English language continuing to inspire literature theatre and cinema while provoking reflection upon the ethical consequences of human invention. Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley 1797–1851 was an English novelist essayist and biographer and one of the central literary figures of the Romantic period. The daughter of the philosopher William Godwin and the writer and advocate of women's rights Mary Wollstonecraft she grew up within an exceptional intellectual milieu. Although best known for Frankenstein her works also include The Last Man Valperga and Lodore. Her editorial work played an important part in preserving and establishing the literary legacy of her husband Percy Bysshe Shelley.
