1938réf. 1307621938. First Edition. GREENE Graham. Brighton Rock. New York: Viking 1938. Octavo original silver-stamped black and rose boards original dust jacket. Housed in a custom slipcase. $4000.First edition of Greenes electrifying noir novelhis first enquiry into the ways of man and God this American edition preceding the English edition by one month in scarce unrestored dust jacket.Following the success of A Gun for Sale 1936 Graham Greene drew upon news stories for this noir novel about a gang led by the sadistic killer Pinkie Brown. Although Greene claimed that his unforgettable characters had no living models it has been suggested that barmaid Ida Arnold was inspired by Mae West whose films had been reviewed by Greene. ""West's description of herself as 'a girl who lost her reputation but never missed it' could be said of Ida."" Yet Brighton Rock achieves a resonance that reaches beyond a tale of gang warfare or popular thrills. ""There is a battle for Pinkie's soul between the powers of Good and Evil as there was in the case of Marlowe's Dr. Faustus."" Greene's questioning of good and evil makes this ""his first Catholic novel his first enquiry into the ways of man and God It was to lead on to Power and the Glory 1940 and End of the Affair 1951"" Sherry I:637-649. Greene finished the novel in January 1938 and in May ""worked on proofs of the American edition"" Sherry II:3. ""Brighton Rock is an audacious book It is a world of razors bullies poverty false sentiments torture and death"" Shelden 203. Greene later noted that ""Brighton Rock is one of the best I ever wrote"" Ways of Escape. First edition appearing one month before the English edition: with ""Published in June 1938"" on the copyright page. Greene co-authored the screenplay for the 1947 Boulting Brothers film starring Richard Attenborough as Pinkie""the original sawdust Caesar just as he is the slick-haired ted with a razor blade Alex in A Clockwork Orange 1971 It's hard to locate a real tradition of homegrown British film noir but Brighton Rock comes close to it"" Guardian. Miller 17a. Wobbe A13b. Hubin 180. Text fine very lightest rubbing to silver-stamped boards toning to cloth spine; dust jacket with light edge-wear toning to spine with shallow chipping to spine ends minor tape reinforcement to verso. An extremely good copy in scarce unrestored dust jacket. hardcover

réf. 355490718660First Edition. Sydney Australia: The Invincible Press n.d. circa 1945. First Australian Edition First Issue. A softcover production with stiff printed stapled wrappers not issued with a D/W. Usual page tanning due to the poor quality of paper used and rubbing to the sides of the spine and with a hint of loss at the head and tail of the spine but still overall a solid VG copy of this very rare edition seldom found in collectable condition given the fragility of its production. The front covers shows the printed published price of 1/6 without the later over-sticker seen elsewhere. The design of the front cover matches that of the UK first edition. A bibliographical note: the first issue of this Australian first edition has an advert for "Murder is Forgetful" by William Bogart to the back panel which the National Library of Australia speculate as being published in "1945 ". Second or later issues of this title have a list of other books available in a list from the Invincible Press including Brighton Rock. A further bibliographical note: This the first Australian Edition is important as it drastically condensed various parts so that for example the final chapter was reduced to less than one page. The book gives no warning that the text is thus abridged. It seems virtually certain that the publishers and not the author bore the responsibility for these alterations. This book was printed under austerity measures by Truth and Sportsman Ltd cnr. Kippax and Holt Streets Sydney. Because of wartime restrictions the quality of both paper and print is very poor which is the reason why most copies turn up in really battered tatty well-used and creased shape and often with foxing to the covers. This copy has escaped that fate and is in shelvable condition. The publication date of the Australian first edition is un-known although Cedric Watts at the 1999 Graham Greene International Festival opined that it was published circa 1950. Photographs/scans available upon request. A real Graham Greene rarity. paperback
