1929rif. 52365San Francisco: William Andrews Clark Jr. 1929. Hardcover. 4to. Quarter faux vellum with gilt spine lettering and burgundy paper over boards. xxix 97pp. Top edge gilt. Double frontispiece 13 color plates. Fine. TOGETHER WITH: "All for Love: Or The World Well Lost. A Tragedy." 8vo. Quarter faux vellum and burgundy paper over boards. 18pp 79pp. Top edge gilt. Fine. Touch of spine sunning. Both housed in single 2-compartment slipcase of burgundy paper over heavy boards with paper spine label. Very good. Rather rubbed and worn but quite strong. Attractive copy of this heroic tragedy about the last days of Mark Antony and Cleopatra each volume bearing a colophon noting limitation of 250 numbered copies this #192. William H. Wilke's face-to-face etched portraits of Shakespeare and Dryden are striking and lovely. The 13 color plates reproduce the mural Clark commissioned for the salon of his library in Los Angeles now a specialized research library. Clark's "Compliments of" slip with "Christmas 1929" printed in red tipped to front flyleaf. Mining magnate entrepreneur and one-time senator from Montana Clark 1839-1925 together with John Henry Nash issued a small series of literary editions accompanied by facsimiles of rarities in his collection and this is one such production. The facsimile reproduces his copy of the London 1678 first edition each bearing the reproduction bookplate on front pastedown of the Bridgewater Library from whose library Clark acquired his copy.
