Early in 1682 Dryden published The Medall a work full of unsparing invective against the Whigs prefaced by a vigorous and plainspoken prose “Epistle to the Whigs.” The opposition party the nascent Whigs had a medal struck in Poland to commemorate the release of one of their leaders the Earl of Shaftesbury who had been held in the Tower on charges of treason. A collection of some twelve thousand verses which "again show Dryden’s energy of thought and language undiminished by age" DNB including paraphrases or translations of the first book of the ‘Iliad’ some of Ovid’s ‘Metamorphoses’ and tales from Chaucer and Boccaccio. There is also a poem ‘To my Honoured Kinsman John Driden’ verses addressed to the Duchess of Ormond and lines on ‘A Fair Maiden lady who died at Bath’ the wife of Lord Abingdon. The preface written in fine prose contains an excellent appreciation of Chaucer as well as attacks on Milbourne and Sir Richard Blackmore and a reply to Jeremy Collier’s attack on the stage. 1917Best.-Nr. WS0048Ernst Deutsch-Dryden 1883–1938 war ein österreichischer Künstler Modedesigner Illustrator und Grafikdesigner. Er besuchte möglicherweise die Wiener Kunstgewerbeschule war auch in Berlin tätig und arbeitete in einem Stil der dem der Wiener Secession und dem französischen Art déco oder Jugendstil ähnelt. Seine Arbeit konzentrierte sich auf das "Elegante" und "Sinnliche". Später arbeitete er unter anderem in Paris und Hollywood wo er unter anderem Marlene Dietrich einkleiden durfte. Das Mappenwerk ist vollständig mit allen zehn Blättern auf Karton aufgezogen. Einige Kartons weisen kleinere Beschädigungen auf wie z. B. eine kleine Falte an der Seite und auf den Blättern sind einige Stockflecken zu sehen. Die Außenseite der Mappe ist bräunlich verfärbt etwas verschmutzt und leicht geknickt siehe Fotos. ----- Ernst Deutsch-Dryden 1883-1938 was an Austrian artist clothing designer illustrator and graphic designer. He may have studied at the Vienna Kunstgewerbeschule was also active in Berlin and worked in a style related to that of the Vienna Secession and French art deco or Art Nouveau Jugendstil. His work focused on the 'elegant' and 'sensual'. Later he worked in Paris and Hollywood where he dressed Marlene Dietrich among others. The portfolio is complete with all ten sheets mounted on carton. Some cartons have minor damages such as a small crease on the side and there is some foxing on the sheets. The outside of the portfolio is browned and a bit soiled and slightly bent see pictures. If this item is temporarily unavailable I may be traveling and have paused my account.
