Printed by Fairfax Hall at his private press at Stourton House in Westminster with the help of H. Gage-Cole formerly of the Kelmscott and Dove Press as well as S. Bradshaw and S. Ball. A handsome printing of Dryden's tragedy and a very early publication of the Stourton Press. "Hall had set up the Stourton Press in London in 1930. Having asked advice of the wrong people he had acquired some Caslon type and a Cropper treadle press and was feeling thoroughly discouraged by the poor quality of his work when an opportunity came to employ Gage-Cole. His printing room was revolutionized: The Cropper was replaced by an Albion and the other equipment Gage-Cole thought necessary. For a young man on a junior employee's salary to engage a skilled craftsman was rather adventurous-and very alarming for Hall when he realized what thorough but unhurried work was needed. Hall learned much from Gage-Cole but the latter's strong pro-union attitude was a barrier between them. Also although in 1931 Gage-Cole completed Dryden's All for Love for the Stourton Press it was hard for Hall to find work for him as well as money and it was something of a relief to allow him to go and work for St. John Hornby. 1695rif. 564891695. First Edition. DRYDEN John DU FRESNOY Charles Alphonse. De Arte Graphica. The Art of Painting. ISSUED WITH: GRAHAM Richard. A Short Account of the Most Eminent Painters both Ancient and Modern. London: W. Rogers 1695. Two volumes in one. Thick square octavo 19th-century three-quarter tan calf black and green morocco spine labels marbled boards endpapers and edges. $2200.First translation into English prose by Dryden of Du FresnoyÕs Latin poem on the practice of art prefaced by DrydenÕs famous Parallel of Poetry and Painting with engraved allegorical frontispiece by Henry Cooke issued together with Richard GrahamÕs biographical chronology of painters.Du Fresnoy is remembered now almost entirely as a writer rather than a painter. While his few paintings are at best reminiscent of Carraci and Titian Òhe was a great master of the rules history and theory of his professionÓ Chalmers. His Latin poem De Arte Graphica written during his 24-year Italian sojourn is well-regarded as a critical treatise on the practice of the art with general advice to students. It embodies his observations on the art of painting in sound precepts according to the standards of his time. First published in Latin by his friend Pierre Mignard in 1656 De Arte Graphica was translated into English prose by Dryden prefaced by his famous Parallel of Poetry and Painting: ÒExpression and all that belongs to words is that in a poem which coloring is in a picture. The colors well chosen in their proper places together with the lights and shadows which belong to them lighten the design and make it pleasing to the eye. The words the expressions the tropes and figures the versification and all other elegancies of soundÉ perform exactly the same office both in dramatic and epic poetry.Ó Issued with this edition was the first appearance of Richard GrahamÕs biographical chronology of famous artists from Ardices the Corinthian to John Riley court painter to Charles II under a separate title page. ÒGraham was an acquaintance of Vertue the engraver and supplied him with some of the information worked up by Horace Walpole into his Anecdotes of Painting 1762Ó DNB. MacDonald 139a. Wing D2458. This work trade on the fur trade prints the editied journals of Ross Cox and Alexander Ross both of whom worked for the Pacific Fur Company. American businessman John Jacob Astor established the Pacific Fur Company in 1810. He hoped to control the fur trade of the Pacific Northwest and push out his main competitors Great Britain's Hudson's Bay Company and Canada's North West Company. In 1810 33 employees of the Pacific Fur Company arrived at the mouth of the Columbia River in Oregon after an arduous journey. Here they established Fort Astoria and began negotiating with local Native American tribes for beaver and sea otter pelts. Despite some initial success the Pacific Fur Company was dealt a tragic blow in 1811 when the crew of their trading ship the Tonquin died at the hands of hostile native warriors off the coast of Vancouver Island. The Fort's supplies for the coming year were lost. Soon after the War of 1812 broke out between the United States and Great Britain disrupting trade and business. The Pacific Fur Company was officially dissolved in 1813. Caxton Printers unknown books
