Offsetting from plates to some title-pages; very occasional spotting; a few nicks to edges of one volume only but contents generally clean. An attractive set. An excellent complete set which encapsulates English theatre in the Age of Garrick. The plays within represent the hits of the London stage from the Restoration to the 1770s. Each title-page notes that the text includes notation from the manager and prompter's books which provides some insight into the manner in which these plays were actually performed. The 61 frontispieces depict the stars of the London stage in costumed performance. These images of celebrity actors were collectible in their own right and were published independently from the plays within. Sets with all the frontispieces can be difficult to locate. ESTC T39833. 1910rif. 153171London: Henry Frowde Oxford University Press 1910. A handsome early twentieth-century Oxford edition of the poems of John Dryden. Octavo bound in full tree calf with gilt titles and elaborate tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands red morocco lettering label gilt roll-tooled borders to the front and rear panels gilt turn-ins and inner dentelles all edges gilt marbled endpapers tissue-guarded frontispiece. In very good condition. Edited with an introduction and textual notes by John Sargeaunt. John Dryden 1631-1700 was a central figure in the literary culture of Restoration England widely regarded as the period’s leading poet dramatist and critic. His work is characterized by its clarity formal balance and engagement with the political and religious tensions of his time. As Poet Laureate Dryden contributed to the development of English neoclassicism emphasizing order decorum and adherence to classical models. His critical essays particularly An Essay of Dramatic Poesy 1668 helped shape early English literary criticism by articulating principles of genre imitation and poetic judgment. In both his satires such as Absalom and Achitophel and his translations of classical authors like Virgil Dryden demonstrated a mastery of heroic couplets and a commitment to adapting classical traditions to contemporary English contexts.
