1895Best.-Nr. 644M3London: George Routledge and Sons Limited 1895. Leather. Very Good Indeed. 7.5" by 5.5". None. An attractive half leather bound copy of James Boswell's notable biography of Samuel Johnson; with charming marbled paper over boards and marbled endpapers and textblock. Boswell's biography of Samuel Johnson is often claimed to be the greatest biography written in English and the text played an important role in the development of the modern genre of biography. Whilst Boswell's personal acquaintance with his subject began rather later in 1763 when Johnson was fifty four years old Boswell covered the entirety of Johnson's life by means of additional research. The most admired and best remembered portions of the book though are Boswell's first-hand accounts of Johnson from the last twenty-one years of the subject's life. However the text has not escaped criticism. Boswell took many critical liberties with Johnson's life making various changes to quotations and even censoring comments made by the writer. Nonetheless modern biographers have found Boswell's biography an important source of information on Johnson and his times. The text in this work is in columns throughout and contains supplementary notes throughout. Featuring a folding 'Round Robin addressed to Samuel Johnson' facing page 279. In a half polished calf binding with marbled paper over boards. Externally excellent with slight rubbing to extremities and head and tail of spine. Very slight rubbing to leather of spine and joints. Internally firmly bound. Pages age toned to extremities but bright with only the odd light spot to the occasional page. Very Good Indeed George Routledge and Sons, Limited hardcover

Hardcover. handwriting facsimiles. pp.iv 264.Larger 4toThe first publication of Boswell's private papers which had since Boswell's death in 1785 lain locked in a cabinet sequestered in the estate of Lord Talbot de Malahide until the copyright to them was acquired by Lieut. Col. Isham 'as a result of which this long-shut gateway into the eighteenth century was finally unlocked'. Prepared for the press by Geoffrey Scott whose 'duty has here been confined except in Vol. VI to establish the text and chronology of the documents; to classify them with a view to the special character of this edition; and to provide some brief explanatory prefaces.'
