This is an important edition as it contains 576 illustrations facsimiles and maps including 13 plates in photogravure. The London Times reviewer stated: "The raison d'etre of this edition is its illustrations. Of these there are portraits from authentic originals views from old prints autographs facsimile title-pages. a series of views of Johnson's old haunts. Mr. Ingpen's literary contribution consists of short notes to the pictures and his industry in collecting illustrative material." The internal text blocks remain incredibly tight and firm but the outer leather boards have detached from the text blocks over time. Volume 1: Front cover detached. Minor shelf wear at the top/bottom of the spine; gold lettering remains bright. Includes intact frontispiece/facsimile. Volume 2: Front cover detached. Slight wear to the top of the spine; lettering is fully intact. Volume 3: Front cover detached. Slight wear to the top of the spine. One blank flyleaf page in the front is detached. The pages are exceptionally clean bright and crisp throughout showing almost zero yellowing and virtually no foxing. All historical plates and facsimile documents are present. One of the facsimiles has yellowing but is still very readable and intact. Provenance: Features a charming early 19th-century pencil ownership signature on the front endpaper "Jno. Nares.".
