Complete with half-title and errata.'Though the Life is a vaster and richer piece of work no one will maintain that it displays Boswell's unique gift for biography better than the Tour. Indeed most lovers of Boswell will agree that the Tour as a whole is more consistently good than the Life; that is that nowhere in the Life could one find so many consecutive first-class pages as those that compose this book' Pottle. The printed book is almost identical with the actual journal that was kept in 1773. 1768Best.-Nr. 22871Leipzig: Caspar Fritsch 1768. Contemporary paper-covered boards spine with red title label lettered in gold red edges. 8vo. With an engraved folding map of Corsica 29 x 44 cm by J.D. Philippin geb. Sysang. 2 parts in 1 volume. The first German edition of Boswell's Account of Corsica 1768 translated by Anton Ernst Klausing. In the first part Boswell recounts historical and geographical information about Corsica while the second part includes a lively and detailed narrative of his journey to the island interspersed with conversations with the Corsican patriot and leader Pasquale Paoli. The conversations with Paoli centre on democracy social freedom religion and of course the Corsican Cause. Following Corsica's invasion by the French in 1768 Paoli took refuge in England where he was feted by Samuel Johnson and his circle.Boswell's account was very successful. First published in 1768 it was immediately reprinted several times and translated into French Dutch Italian and German. The map with a small tear binding chafed corners bumped. A very good copy with the bookplate of Franz Pollack-Parnau on front pastedown.l VD 18 10550321; Watson II col. 1211; cf. Cox I pp. 138-9 other eds. Caspar Fritsch, hardcover
1768Best.-Nr. 75REFAZAY022Glasgow: printed by Robert & Andrew Foulis for Edward & Charles Dilly London 1768. Contemporary calf rebacked with the original backstrip with the red morocco title label lettered in gold laid down. 8vo ca. 21 x 13 cm. With an engraved vignette on the title page incorporating the crowned coat of arms of the Republic of Corsica and a large folding map plate size 27.5 x 45 cm of Corsica engraved in Edinburgh by Thomas Phinn in 1768. First edition of a delightful and important travel book by James Boswell 1740-1795 best known as the friend and biographer of Samuel Johnson. His first major publication it includes a journal of his 1765 visit to the new Republic of Corsica which had declared its independence from the Republic of Genoa in 1755 as well as his memoires of the Republics founding father and president Pasquale Paoli 1725-1807. Boswells book made the new republic and its leader famous and helped give them legitimacy. Two-and-a-half months after Boswells book appeared Genoa unable to conquer Corsica sold its claim to France which invaded and conquered it in 1769. Boswells book proved so popular that three more editions appeared before the end of 1768. It is divided into two parts the first giving a detailed description and history of Corsica and the second containing a journal of Boswell's voyage to and travels on the island. It was especially this latter part that excited the public being a lively account of Boswell's quixotic adventures in Corsica and his association with President Paoli.Boswell enjoyed his role as promoter of Corsica's interests so much that he appeared in Corsican costume at Garrick's anniversary party in honour of Shakespeare at Stratford-on-Avon in 1769. Johnson said about Boswell's book: "Your History is like other histories but your Journal is in a very high degree curious and delightful". The large folding map newly made for Boswell's account by his servant Thomas Phinn and dated 1768 is one of the rare maps solely devoted to the island. The book was translated within a few years into Dutch German French and Italian. With the armorial bookplate of Benjamin Hartley Foote on the front pastedown. Rebacked small tear in the map occasional foxing and browning. Otherwise in good condition.l Cox I pp. 138-139; ESTC T26157; Gaskell Foulis press 473; Pottle 24; Rothschild 442; cf. Title-page skillfully repaired at the gutter; very good copy enclosed in a chemise and quarter morocco slipcase. 4to modern blue paper wrappers 37 pages. An important literary copyright dispute between booksellers in England and Scotland known as Hinton v. Donaldson in which James Boswell and John MacLaurin represented the Edinburgh publisher Alexander Donaldson and his cohorts against claims by London publishers that he was violating their copyrights. Donaldson specialized in publishing inexpensive reprints of English books which he maintained were not protected by the Copyright Act of 1710. The London publishers argued that their copyright existed in perpetuity and that their works were being reprinted illegally. They won an initial ruling in the London Court of Chancery in 1769 and proceeded to the Scottish Court of Session to continue their case where Boswell and MacLaurin argued for Donaldson. The Scottish Court comprised of 15 judges agreed 11 to one with the defendants and their interestingly disparate opinions on copyright protection and law were compiled by Boswell and published to help Donaldson's case as it was appealed in London. Contemporary annotation on one page; manuscript number "2" in the upper margin of the title-page; early ink ownership stamp of John Hope / Advocate on the title-page which is probably John Hope 1794-1858 advocate and later judge in the court of session.
