With an engraved coat of arms on the title page and a large engraved folding map of Corsica. 2 parts in 1 volume. XII 2 384 pp. Second edition of a delightful and important travel book by James Boswell 1740-1795 best known as the friend and biographer of Samuel Johnson. His first major publication it includes a journal of his 1765 visit to the new Republic of Corsica which had declared its independence from the Republic of Genoa in 1755 as well as his memoires of the Republics founding father and president Pasquale Paoli 1725-1807. Boswells work made the new republic and its leader famous and helped give them legitimacy. It proved so popular that three more editions appeared before the end of 1768. It is divided into two parts the first giving a detailed description and history of Corsica and the second containing a journal of Boswell's voyage to and travels on the island. It was especially this latter part that excited the public being a lively account of Boswell's quixotic adventures in Corsica and his association with President Paoli. The large folding map newly made for Boswell's account by his servant Thomas Phinn and dated 1768 is one of the rare maps solely devoted to the island. The work was translated within a few years into Dutch German French and Italian. With the bookplate of John Measure mounted on the front pastedown. The edges and corners of the boards are very slightly scuffed the top outer corner of the front board is bumped. The leaves and plate are somewhat browned. Otherwise in good condition.l Cox I pp. 138-9; ESTC T26158; cf. Lowndes The Bibliogr. Manual of Engl. Lit. I p. 242 first ed. hardcover

1887rif. 806F33Oxford: Clarendon Press 1887 . First edition. Leather. Near Fine. 9" by 6.5". Not Stated. James Boswell's complete six volume biography of Samuel Johnson beautifully bound in half calf and illustrated throughout. The first edition of this work to be edited by George Birkbeck Hill. In beautiful signed half calf bindings from Frost & Co. of Bath this is an excellent and complete six volume set of James Boswell's biography of English writer Dr. Samuel Johnson. The first edition thus being the first edition edited by George Birkbeck Hill and including both Boswell's 'Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides' and Johnson's 'Diary of a Journey into North Wales'.Illustrated with a frontispiece portrait to four volumes two further engraved plates and six folding plates. Collated complete.A landmark work in the development of the modern biography in English many have claimed it as the greatest biography ever written. Nevertheless this biography takes many critical liberties with Johnson's life with Boswell making various changes to Johnson's quotations and even censoring his comments. In signed half calf bindings with gilt detailing to back strips and cloth covered boards. Light fading to back strips otherwise externally lovely. Binder's stamps to verso of front free endpapers. Internally firmly bound. Pages bright and clean. Near Fine Clarendon Press hardcover
1786rif. 23288London: Printed for Alex Hogg n.d but 1786. hardcover. Rebacked as noted covers show some scuffing corners reinforced sometime in the distant past 2 pages with mends to lower margins otherwise text and plates very clean and quite free of foxing with scattered mostly minor offsetting from plates to text. Overall a very nice copy. Folio 40cm original sheep rebacked retaining spine and lettering piece; iv 42 pp. introductory the remaining text an unpaginated 520 pp 247 plates including 51 mostly full-page county and regional maps some with 2 images on the plate plans and including a large folding plate at rear a facsimile of the 1648 document indicting Charles II. 4-page subscriber list and 4-page index to the plates at rear. Plates many with multiple images on the plate include besides castles and various antiquities 3 each of English coins and seals. The work was issued in 100 parts apparently in rather random sequence. Gatherings are unsigned throughout and in this volume part numbering ceases after part 70. However the instructions to the binder at the tail of the last index page makes suggestions for creating order and these have mostly been followed though the Cambridgshire map is found late in the volume opposite the "Description of Cambridge Castle" rather than opposite the descriptive text for the County in part 31. Maps are by Thomas Kitchin and first appeared in the London Magazine from 1747-1760 except the Yorkshire map which is by T. Conder 1784. See Whitaker: The Harold Whitaker Collection Leeds 1947 p53. According to Lowndes the plates are copied from Francis Grose Printed for Alex Hogg hardcover
