Samuel Johnson byname Dr. Johnson born September 18 1709 Lichfield Staffordshire England - died December 13 1784 London English critic biographer essayist poet and lexicographer regarded as one of the greatest figures of 18th-century life and letters. Johnson once characterized literary biographies as "mournful narratives" and he believed that he lived "a life radically wretched." Yet his career can be seen as a literary success story of the sickly boy from the Midlands who by talent tenacity and intelligence became the foremost literary figure and the most formidable conversationalist of his time. For future generations Johnson was synonymous with the later 18th century in England. The disparity between his circumstances and achievement gives his life its especial interest. - Britannica George Routledge and Sons, Limited hardcover

1952réf. 26187New York::: McGraw-Hill 1952. First Printing of the First US Edition. A Near Fine copy in a Near Fine bright unclipped dust jacket with a touch of edge wear. These memoranda and letters from the time a young James Boswell spent in holland studying the law provide an intimate look at the famous biographer. Boswell seems a man troubled by depression as well as pressure from his father and a desire to raise himself socially. He can also be a kind of moral scold to the people he valued most. Not necessarily an attractive character but his candor and intimacy are what is valuable to a reader interested in how people really lived in the distant past. McGraw-Hill,, unknown

A VERY HANDSOME COPY OF TWO OF THE GREAT BOOKS OF THE AGE. Celebrated for its intimacy and vividness Boswell's Life of Johnson "is one of the best books in the world. It is assuredly a great very great work. Homer is not more decidedly the first of heroic Poets--Shakespeare is not more decidedly the first of Dramatists--Demosthenes is not more decidedly the first of Orators than Boswell is the first of Biographers." Macauley in the Edinburgh Review 1831. Boswell learned a great deal about the art of biography from his subject and brought to his task boundless curiosity persistence and zest. The tour proved to be inspirational for both men. Johnson published A JOURNEY TO THE WESTERN ISLANDS OF SCOTLAND in 1775 and Boswell in addition to this work used his notes from the tour extensively in his LIFE OF JOHNSON published in 1791. "As a narrative of personal adventures Boswell's account is to be preferred to Johnson's. Naturally such a work as was true of everything concerning Dr. Johnson aroused great interest which was heightened by Boswell's frankness in expressing opinions about his hosts as well as by his naiveté in relating incidents that did not reflect credit to himself" Cox. This is a very handsomely bound and readable copy of these two masterworks and includes important contributions Mr. Malone's and Mr. Boswell's advertisements as well as a significant number of the Thrale letters and others.
