Yet a wealth of research and analysis is available that moves the spotlight from the question of what culture is towards understanding what we are doing when we talk about culture. This book brings that focus to planning research examining culture as a socio-historical concept and introducing a line of scholarship both established and recent to show what 'culture' does and why. Illustrated by a wide range of case studies from planning contexts it addresses the materialisation of abstract concepts magic ownership performance and embodiment citizenship bodies in politics and social categorisation house-society the public. In doing so it shows how a deeper understanding of culture can offer new insights into the challenges that planners and planning theorists face. While "Planning and Culture" is aimed primarily at planning theorists professionals and students it has equal relevance for students of human geography or sociology and is accessible to a wider readership. In effect it opens up the field of planning to a new realm of research enabling readers to think beyond the bounds of what they know about planning and to think about what they may or may not know about culture. . 2011. 0754677222 . FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request - IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - Flawless copy brand new pristine never opened -- xiii 1 222 pages 100 color illustrations. -- with a bonus offer--; The combination of the woodcut—a print method devised early in the fifteenth century—with Johannes Gutenberg's revolutionary invention of printing with moveable type resulted in a powerful explosion of information and ideas. For the first time it was possible to use a mechanized system to print identical copies of books containing both text and images. Featured in A Heavenly Craft are the earliest surviving examples of these books from throughout Western Europe all printed within the first century after Gutenberg's invention. The contributors bring these rare books to life exploring the evolution of the technique composition and coloration of the woodcut beginning with the earliest publications. Many of the woodcut designs grew out of the tradition of manuscript illumination in which book illustrations were painstakingly executed by hand. The authors also present the distinguishing features of national style and taste treating the reader to examples from Germany Italy France Spain and the Netherlands. In addition A Heavenly Craft describes the provenance of these volumes providing an account of how Lessing J. Rosenwald purchased them from the heir to the Lea and Perrins fortune and later donated them to the Library of Congress. These early printed volumes are the predecessors of today's illustrated books. A Heavenly Craft celebrates these origins making these early publications available to bibliophiles and print lovers. 100 color illustrations. . 2004. 0807615366 . George Braziller; Et Al hardcover

FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request - IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - Flawless copy brand new pristine never opened -- 150 pp. -- with a bonus offer--; Architecture for a Free Subjectivity reformulates the French philosopher Gilles Deleuze's model of subjectivity for architecture by surveying the prolific effects of architectural encounter and the spaces that figure in them. For Deleuze and his Lacanian collaborator Felix Guattari subjectivity does not refer to a person but to the potential for and event of matter becoming subject and the myriad ways for this to take place. By extension this book theorizes architecture as a self-actuating or creative agency for the liberation of purely "impersonal effects." Imagine a chemical reaction a riot in the banlieues indeed a walk through a city. Simone Brott declares that the architectural object does not merely take part in the production of subjectivity but that it constitutes its own. This book is to date the only attempt to develop Deleuze's philosophy of subjectivity in singularly architectural terms. Through a screening of modern and postmodern American and European works this provocative volume draws the reader into a close encounter with architectural interiors film scenes and other arrangements while interrogating the discourses of subjectivity surrounding them and the evacuation of the subject in the contemporary discussion. The impersonal effects of architecture radically changes the methodology just as it reimagines architectural subjectivity for the twenty-first century. . 2011. 1409419959 . Ashgate hardcover
