1953ref. 583397New York: Alfred A. Knopf 1953. Hardcover. Very Good/Good. First American edition. Edited and translated by H.M. Parshley. Quarto. xxx 732 xiv pp. Faint paperclip impression on a couple pages of the introduction a bit of gilt spine rubbed off bottom corner of rear board lightly bumped very good or better in a good only dust jacket with several tears creases and toning. Owner name of Clifford Sellers Henderson on front fly dated 1953 with the inscription: "Most disappointing limited point of view. C.S.H." Henderson was a founding editor of the Reader's Digest Book Club and was married to Ralph Ernest Henderson who was the creator and first editor in chief of The Reader's Digest Condensed Books. The book was possibly being considered for the book club or the condensed books as there is also a laid in note addressed to Ralph from someone named Harry possibly another editor with the initials "REH" at the top that reads: "Ralph: Goodness! I'm afraid I was misled by the ads. At any rate there is more in here about women than I think I want to contemplate on vacation. Thanks just the same. Harry. 2/3." The author's controversial book which was banned by the Vatican was considered a groundbreaking work of feminist philosophy and laid the groundwork for the second wave of feminism. Originally published in two volumes as Le Deuxième Sexe: I. Les Faits et les Mythies II. L'Expérience Vécue. Alfred A. Knopf hardcover books
