1803réf. 54894London: Printed by and for C. and R. Baldwin 1803. Very good. First edition of this collection celebrating the revival of the sonnet tracing its history from Spenser to Shakespeare and Milton through contemporaries Charlotte Smith Mary Robinson and a young Leigh Hunt. The English sonnet fell out of fashion in the early 18th century only to come roaring back to popularity with the publication of Charlotte Smith's ELEGIAC SONNETS in 1784. But this volume provides a much wider and more nuanced picture of the development of the English sonnet including Smith's predecessor Thomas Edwards and her contemporaries Anna Seward whom Henderson especially likes William Lisle Bowles Helen Maria Williams and Mary Robinson. Henderson's introduction contextualizes the wide range of sonnets included from the amatory Robinson to the elegiac Smith. This compendium established the state of playing field for the form in the Romantic era and it was a favorite form of Coleridge Keats Shelley and Wordsworth. Coleridge wrote a pamphlet celebrating the form in 1796 and the first poem Wordsworth published was "Sonnet on Seeing Miss Helen Maria Williams Weep" in 1787 an homage to Williams and Charlotte Smith both. A notable Romantic-era collection unusual in so widely acknowledging the debts of English poetry to women writers. Contemporary half roan marbled paper boards gilt-ruled and -lettered spine. Red speckled edges. Illustrated with engraved frontispiece and two further full-page engravings by T.W. Tomkins after P. Henderson. xl 192 pages. Some pencil notes to endpapers. Binding rubbed at extremities some foxing largely marginal to first few gatherings. Printed by and for C. and R. Baldwin unknown

King Alice Shepherd and H. Granville Fell. In its prime the company experimented and specialised in highly skilled and beautiful bindings; this example being one of them. Chivers was born in Bath to a bookbinding family. After working for his father and various other binders he opened his own business in 1878 in the premises formerly occupied by Robert Rivière in Union Street Bath. He subsequently moved to a double fronted shop at 39 Gay Street and then as the business expanded to a large house at Portway in Combe Park where the company operated until 1990. London, J.M. Armorial bookplate with motto 'Festina Lente'. A pleasing set of this rare work in bright original bindings. Second edition revised. Published a year after the first St. John added to this second edition an introduction a chapter on pirates another on animals an index and occasionally introduced some new anecdote. The four hand-coloured plates illustrate carnivorous pitcher plants Nepenthes and are engraved after illustrations first published in the Transactions of the Linnean Society.'Borneo one of the most interesting and romantic regions in the world' thus starts this fascinating book. Its author Spenser St. John 1825-1910 was a British diplomat and explorer. He was private secretary to Sir James Brooke the Rajah of Sarawak in Borneo. In 1856 St. John was appointed British consul-general to the native states of Borneo; he explored the country and went further into the interior than any previous European traveller. His habit of wearing native dress resulted in complaints to London. The present book based on his full and accurate journals also supplemented by other visitors' testimonies is a well-written and beautifully illustrated account of the author's travels. ODNB.
