Excellent condition with only very minor signs of wear. Some occasional fine markings in text with pencil. Includes: Illustrations / Bibliographical Note / A View of the Present State of Ireland / Commentary / Index etc. Spenser made his name as a poet but made his living as an official in the royal service in Ireland. On his second visit to England in 1596 he compiled the View. He had had some 15 years' experience in various posts but was never in a position to gather such comprehensive knowledge of the various problems of government and the book was probably prompted by senior officers who could supply the facts and wanted the situation stated completely. Its thus useful as a statement of official opinion but it tells us much of the poet his interest in history his love of beautiful country his personal loyalties and the uneven emotional complex bred of contrast of experience. The official of the View was also the poet of the Faerie Queen. Edmund Spenser 1552/1553 13 January 1599 was an English poet best known for The Faerie Queene an epic poem and fantastical allegory celebrating the Tudor dynasty and Elizabeth I. He is recognized as one of the premier craftsmen of nascent Modern English verse and is often considered one of the greatest poets in the English language. Wikipedia William Lindsay Renwick 6 January 1889 to 25 November 1970 was Professor of English Literature at the Durham University from 1921 to 1945 and Regis Professor of Rhetoric and English Literature at University of Edinburgh from 1945-1959. hardcover

1934ref. 11180Eric Partridge 1934. 1st edition. Good/No Jacket. Hard covers no dust jacket Inscribed by the editor on ffep. to Lord Nuffield then a Baronet. A remarkable document prepared by Spenser while serving in Ireland; none too complimentary in parts it constitutes an eye-witness account of the state of late 16th century Ireland in the form of a dialogue between Eudox and Iren. The language is of Shakespearian vintage and is thus a little obscure in places. About a third of the book is taken up with the editor’s Commentary with extensive end-notes. Eric Partridge hardcover

2024ref. BIBHB0097021682024. Hardcover. New. About The Book: ""Amoretti"" is a sonnet cycle by Edmund Spenser published in 1595 chronicling his courtship and marriage to Elizabeth Boyle. It comprises 89 sonnets alongside other poems celebrating their love and union. Spenser's innovative approach diverges from traditional Petrarchan themes focusing on a sincere courtship and eventual marriage rather than unattainable love. Each sonnet corresponds with daily scripture readings blending Petrarchan conventions with religious motifs. Despite criticisms of its inferiority to other sonnet sequences ""Amoretti"" showcases Spenser's skill in expressing a range of emotions and tones contributing to his legacy as a significant Renaissance poet. About The Author: Edmund Spenser 15531599 was an English poet renowned for ""The Faerie Queene"" an epic poem celebrating the Tudor dynasty. He's hailed as a master of nascent Modern English verse bridging linguistic gaps between Vedic and Iranian peoples. Spenser's life journey from London to Ireland informs his works including ""The Shepheardes Calender"" and ""Amoretti."" His influential writings like ""A View of the Present State of Irelande"" reflect his views on reform and religion shaping English literary tradition.
