Non potrebbe essere diversamente, vista la gran mole di rinvii, di echi, di memorie complesse». (Prof. Enrico Malato) Avvicinandosi alla conclusione e dopo i 9 tomi già pubblicati, la NECOD (Nuova Edizione Commentata delle Opere di Dante) dà inizio, nel Settecentenario della morte del Sommo Poeta, alla pubblicazione del volume più atteso: La Divina Commedia, a cura del Prof. Enrico Malato. Il volume, il VI della NECOD, è l'unico di un'opera unitaria, articolato in più tomi, resi necessari dall'ampiezza e dalla complessità dell'opera stessa. La conclusione del progetto NECOD porta a compimento il "monumento cartaceo" a Dante pensato da Giovanni Boccaccio nel 1300, ovvero un'edizione completa e commentata delle sue opere. Nella riconosciuta impossibilità di una edizione critica de La Divina Commedia, esclusa da 150 anni di tentativi falliti, la nuova edizione commentata che se ne propone nella NECOD assume a fondamento il testo che appare oggi il piú affidabile, allestito da G. Petrocchi (nel 1966-'68) come "testo base", preparatorio di una ulteriore elaborazione, poi mancata. Su questo il curatore ha lavorato, operando un'attenta revisione nella linea delle acquisizioni della filologia e critica dantesca piú avanzate. Criterio orientativo è stato un rigoroso cauto esercizio della interpretatio al servizio della constitutio textus, cioè un uso prudente della interpretazione e della critica comparativa nella selezione di quelle che potevano ritenersi lezioni originali, preferite alle alternative portate dalla tradizione. Tale lavoro di revisione e approfondimento interpretativo del dettato, che ha portato a cogliere i valori piú profondi, le accezioni, le implicazioni nascoste del messaggio poetico, ha consentito un cospicuo arricchimento del commento, che per la prima volta, superando lo schema della sequenza di chiose piú o meno fitte, dense ed estese, illustrative di singoli versi o gruppi di versi, è concepito come "accompagnamento" del lettore in tutto lo svolgimento della narrazione poetica, sostenuto da una parafrasi continua del testo, con approfondimenti successivi di tutti i dati e i significati sottostanti. Completano l'edizione vari Indici e strumenti di consultazione, tra i quali prezioso un Dizionario della 'Divina Commedia', con le funzioni quasi di una piccola "enciclopedia dantesca".
