These animal deaths became the haunting wood engravings inside the text which are paired with prose and poetry about roadkill. I wanted to highlight one of the animals from the text on the cover of the binding. I chose the coyote because I was captured by the angle showcasing its long lanky legs. The coyote is set against a hand-dyed background made to resemble gravel and the outline of a river in the area where Robinson attended college. The river is embroidered over a range of different animal leathers plus handmade paper." artist statement Cheloniidae Press hardcover books
E' questa la stessa raccolta, con titolo e veste editoriale variat, ma con lo stesso contenuto e storie, delle "Delizie degli eruditi toscani" stampata sempre dal Cambiagi dal 1770 al 1789. Gamba 2705; Moreni I, 483; Razzolini, pag. Codice inv.1031114
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) In contemporary fine black 1/3 leather bdg. Decorated gilt to spine. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). 112 p. Extremely rare first edition of this Nabi's first-hand account of Mecca, Medina and the Hejaz during his pilgrimage in the late 17th century. This is the most celebrated literary pilgrimage narrative written in Ottoman Turkish. Nabi (1642-1712) was one of the prominent Ottoman poets and is considered a foremost exponent of the didactic trend (hikem-i tarz) in Ottoman Turkish literature. Nabi, whose given name was Yusuf, was born in Urfa (then known as Ruha) in 1052/1642. In 1082/1671 he took part in the Ottoman military campaign in Poland, in the retinue of Müsahib Pasha, (1640-1686). Having spent thirteen years in Istanbul, Nabi desired to go on a pilgrimage to Mecca. He was personally ready to undertake a journey to the Hijaz and to set down an eloquent account of his journey, the experience of his lifetime. Accordingly, having achieved a position of good standing with his patrons, Müsahib Mustafa Pasha and Mehmed IV, Nabi revived his longstanding desire to perform the hajj. In 1089/1678, at around 37 years of age, he set out in a small private caravan from Istanbul, passing through Konya, Urfa, Damascus, Jerusalem and Cairo, where he joined the main Egyptian pilgrimage caravan. The work, which is one of the most successful examples of Ottoman insa (artistic prose), includes historical, sociological, geographical and autobiographical information. In his preliminary remarks, Nabi indicates that he had received governmental help for his journey. He relates that he first obtained leave for the hajj from his patron Musahib Mustafa Pasha, and then submitted a qasida to Mehmed IV, describing the sacred places. The sultan provided Nabi a letter of recommendation addressed to Abdurrahman Pasha (d. 1691), governor of Egypt, ordering him to enable Nabi to make a comfortable journey. Nabi traveled in a small private caravan, since the caravan extended its route to Nabi's homeland, Urfa, and spent about fifty days there. It appears that he generally followed the usual route of the pilgrimage caravan from Istanbul to Damascus, passing through Scutari, Kartal, Gebze, Hersek, Iznik, Eskisehir, Seyitgazi, Aksehir, Ilgin, Ladik, Konia, Eregli, Adana, Misis bridge, Payas, Antioche, Aleppo (with a long detour to Urfa (Edessa) and back to Aleppo via Aintab), Hama, Hims and the Kuteyfe strait. He was fascinated with the splendid architecture of the buildings, the bazaars and the mosques built side by side by Kurdish and Circassian rulers and the Nile when he arrived in Cairo. Nabi gives a general description of the city of Cairo, the Nile, the two reservoirs of the city, parklands, the Ahram hills and the immediate neighborhood of the city. In Mecca, Nabi visited the sacred sites enthusiastically and performed the hajj on 77 January 1679. He gives a moving account of his experience as a pious emotional pilgrim. It appears that Nabi stayed in Mecca for more than twenty days. Immediately after 1 Muharrem 1090/12 February 1679, he set out for Medina, presumably in the Damascus caravan. While in Medina, Nabi served at the tomb of the Prophet by lighting the candles since his name was on the honorary list of attendants who were determined by the central government to serve the sanctuaries in Mecca and Medina. Nabi regards these services as a testimony to the legitimacy of Ottoman rule. He summarizes his journey of return from Medina to Damascus and to Istanbul in a few general words. Will Cotton is best known for his depictions of “landscapes” composed of sweets: fondant frostings peppermint sticks marshmallows and cotton-candy clouds often inhabited by languidly posed females. Executed with flawless skill and technique Cotton’s work is an optical delight and is formally resonant with the influences of seventeenth-century rococo paintings the nudes of Bouguereau and Cabanel and the classic American pin-ups of George Petty and Alberto Vargas. Cotton’s figures are often inspired by models such as burlesque performers and fellow artists from the art film and music worlds. This book-the artist’s first monograph-is a celebration of Cotton’s work in all mediums: prints drawings canvases and public events. In addition to this elegantly designed trade volume a limited edition of one hundred copies accompanied by a signed and numbered print will be available through Pace Prints. . 2011. 0847836673 . Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Contemporary bdg. covered a special jade paper branded "siguntin". Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). [2], 239 p. Decorated title page with traditional motives, framed text, slight foxing on pages, and bumped backboard. Overall a very good copy. Very early edition (second) of this exceedingly rare "unique work of fiction blending personal and fantastic themes, well in the current of the traditional Ottoman prose, but also exhibiting influences from Western literature". This book has been described by some literary historians as the first Turkish fantastic work in the Western sense. Consisting of three parts and written in a laconic style contrasting with its content, where djinns and fairies surge from within contexts drawn from ordinary real-life situations, Ali Aziz Efendi often pursues by pulling the reader towards the description of magic and extraordinary occurrences. Inspired by a much older story written both in Arabic and Assyrian, the author also displays in his work his deep knowledge of Sufism, Hurufism, and Bektashi traditions. Muhayyelât is considered to be an early precursor of the new Turkish literature to emerge in the Tanzimat period of the 19th century. It also influenced Tanzimat [i.e. Reform] literature directly when the manuscript was printed in 1867 and became a very popular book of the time. His work is re-discovered by Turkey's reading public rather recently and is increasingly admitted as a classic. Ali Aziz Efendi also wrote further and shorter works of prose, which present as complementary extensions to Muhayyelât, as well as some poetry, and kept a correspondence with a number of notable figures of his time, both Ottoman and Western. He is also cited for a short sefâretnâme [i.e. book of the embassy] he wrote relating his introduction to his mission as the ambassador of the Ottoman Empire in Prussia. Giridî [or Giritli] Aziz Efendi was born in Kandiye (Crete) as the son of Tahmisçi Mehmed Efendi, who was the defterdar of the Crete Eyalet, in 1749. The details of his life are rather sparse and scattered. He rose through the Ottoman hierarchy and was sent as ambassador to Prussia in 1796 and he died in Berlin in 1798. His burial marked also the opening of the first Turkish or Muslim cemetery in Berlin.
