réf. 20873Mitchell Edgar D. Autograph note signed addressing the commercial collection of astronaut signatures by an Apollo 14 lunar module pilot and the sixth person to walk on the Moon. Written in response to repeated autograph requests Mitchell's terse refusal documents the market that developed around astronauts as public figures and the effort of a prominent spaceflight participant to distinguish personal correspondence from material apparently sought for resale. The note supports research into Apollo-era celebrity autograph commerce collector practices and the management of public access to American astronauts. Mitchell joined NASA's fifth astronaut group in 1966 and landed in the Moon's Fra Mauro region with Alan Shepard during Apollo 14 in 1971. Mitchell Edgar D. Undated. One page written in black ink on the verso of a letter requesting autographs; dimensions not specified. Addressing the correspondent directly Mitchell writes: "Mr. Shine - Your frequent letters look like commercial collections to me. Sorry. Edgar." The note is signed by first name "Edgar" and remains attached conceptually to the incoming request on which it was written preserving both the solicitation and Mitchell's response. Its wording identifies frequency rather than the substance of any single request as the basis for his suspicion. Mitchell's participation in Apollo 14 gave his autograph substantial public and commercial appeal: as lunar module pilot he spent more than nine hours working on the lunar surface and helped return nearly 100 pounds of lunar samples. The note therefore captures a practical consequence of astronaut celebrity after the Apollo program when repeated mail requests could blur the distinction between admiration collecting and resale. Black-ink handwriting and signature remain clear; no condition defects are reported. Very good. A candid signed response revealing how an Apollo astronaut negotiated the commercial demand for his autograph. unknown books
