Boards rubbed and soiled with fading of gilt titles. 1947 Hard Cover. 312 pp. Original red cloth gilt titles blind-stamped bus on front board. The Wayward Bus is a novel by American author John Steinbeck originally published in 1947. The novel contains several references to the recent Second World War and America's attempts to adjust to life in the immediate postwar era. No single character dominates The Wayward Bus. The viewpoint shifts frequently from one character to another often taking the form of internal monologue so that we are experiencing a given character's thoughts. Much of the novel's length is simply devoted to establishing and delineating the various characters. This novel takes place firmly within "Steinbeck country": most of the narrative occurs at Rebel Corners a crossroads 42 miles south of San Ysidro California. Although considered one of Steinbeck's weaker novels at the time of its original publication The Wayward Bus was financially more successful than any of his previous works. 1943réf. 249514Firenze: Valentino Bompiani 1943. Paperback. 239p. wartime printing the Milano issue a year earlier softbound in 8x4.5 decorated wraps and a color-decorated dust jacket. Not a bad copy but quite acidic and toned with outermost leaves fragile find tiny marginal tears to early and terminal pages. Cover of book itself is also very toned and a tad fragile. The dj was printed on better paperstock there's a little foxing along joint-folds serious top-edge wear with small chips to the head recto dust-soil but colors are fast and no damage to flap-texts. All things considered like WW Two a good copy. One wonders did Vittorini do the translation while in prison he'd published an anti-fascist novel in 1941 that put him behind bars. "The Red Pony is an episodic novella written by American writer John Steinbeck in 1933. The first three chapters were published in magazines from 1933 to 1936. The full book was published in 1937 by Covici Friede. The stories in the book are tales of a boy named Jody Tiflin. The book has four stories about Jody and his life on his father's California ranch. Other main characters include Carl Tiflin - Jody's father; Billy Buck - an expert in horses and a working hand on the ranch; Mrs. Tiflin - Jody's mother; Jody's grandfather - Mrs. Tiflin's father who has a history of crossing the Oregon Trail and enjoys telling stories about his experiences; and Gitano - an old man who wishes to die at the Tiflin ranch. Along with these stories there is a short story taken from one of Steinbeck's earlier works The Pastures of Heaven at the end of the book titled "Junius Maltby". However this last story is omitted in the edition published by Penguin Books. The Viking Press hardcover books

Steinbeck creates around the infamous Pippin the most hilarious royal court ever: Pippin's wife Queen Marie who 'might have taken her place at the bar of a very good restaurant'; his uncle a man of dubious virtue; his glamour-struck daughter and her beau the son of the so-called 'egg king' of Petaluma California; and a motley crew of courtiers and politicians guards and gardeners. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: "John Ernst Steinbeck Jr. February 27 1902 - December 20 1968 was an American writer. He wrote the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Grapes of Wrath 1939 and the novella Of Mice and Men 1937. He wrote a total of twenty-seven books including sixteen novels six non-fiction books and five collections of short stories. In 1962 Steinbeck received the Nobel Prize for Literature.
