Bradenton Florida: Opuscula Press 1986. First separate printing in book form limited to 300 hand-bound numbered copies this being copy #28. Octavo. 19 pp. Frontispiece photographic portrait of Steinbeck by Paul Farber. Edited and introduced by Robert F. Hanson September 1986. Dark brown buckram spine over brown cloth boards with a cream paper title label to the front cover; without dust jacket as issued. ISBN 0-912109-10-6. Goldstone & Payne C120 for the 1955 Holiday original. A fine copy. The first separate book-form appearance of Steinbeck's Holiday magazine essay on his birthplace published in June 1955 as part of the magazine's series in which American writers reflected on the towns of their childhood. Steinbeck had finished East of Eden three years earlier and the essay carries the same complicated feeling for Salinas that runs through the novel — fond exact and unsparing at once. He summons the Salinas of his own boyhood in the 1900s and 1910s and traces the town forward into the post-war agricultural city. Opuscula Press a small Florida imprint that reissued fugitive Steinbeck material produced this hand-bound edition "as a service to Steinbeck collectors." It remains one of the more attractive small-press Steinbeck productions uncommon on the market and sought by collectors building deep California shelves. SKU TO-2026-035 Opuscula Press hardcover

Housed in the original acetate jacket. Spine very slightly darkened minor wear at top of spine otherwise an exceptionally well-preserved near fine copy. A scarce and desirable advance issue of one of Steinbeck's most beloved Monterey novels issued in fragile paper wrappers for pre-publication distribution. Copies retaining the original acetate jacket are particularly uncommon as these ephemeral coverings were seldom preserved. Cannery Row stands among Steinbeck's most warmly regarded works - a loosely structured episodic portrait of life along the Monterey waterfront populated by a cast of unforgettable characters including Doc Mack and the boys. Blending humor pathos and philosophical reflection the novel captures both the camaraderie and quiet desperation of its Depression-era milieu. Advance copies of this title are rare in commerce especially in such superior condition and are keenly sought by collectors for their immediacy to publication and inherent fragility. 1937ref. 100479New York: Covici-Friede 1937. First edition. Near fine in a price-clipped good or better dustwrapper with some chipping near the bottom of the front flap fold and a large but faint dampstain. An uncommon play adapted by Steinbeck from his own novel. Steinbeck's stage adaptation condenses his novella into a three-act tragedy ideally suited to theatrical presentation. The play's dialogue-driven format strips away narrative contemplation rendering each character's thwarted ambitions through stark unadorned exchanges that intensify the work's central themes: the impossibility of economic independence during the Depression the profound isolation persisting within communal spaces and the brutal incompatibility between human vulnerability and a system demanding complete self-sufficiency. The inexorable march toward Lennie's death demonstrates how certain lives become expendable when they cannot conform to society's demands. Covici-Friede unknown
1937ref. 143012New York: Covici Friede Publishers 1937. First edition of Steinbeck's dramatization of his poignant novel. Octavo original cloth. Very good in a good first issue dust jacket with the publisher's price of $2.00 and loss to the crown of the spine. John Steinbeck began Of Mice and Men as a children’s story. “Although the finished novelette does not seem appropriate for children—that intention was obviously abandoned—the simplicity of its style and the clarity and precision of its imagery may well have been prompted by this original purpose… ” Benson 326. The result is “a sophisticated and artful rendering of the basic conflict between two worlds: between an idealized landscape and the real world with its pain and anguish” Literary History of the American West. "A thriller a gripping tale . . . that you will not set down until it is finished. Steinbeck has touched the quick" The New York Times. Covici Friede Publishers hardcover
