Early in December Steinbeck began revising the work shifting the setting to a generic northern Europe and recasting the play as a novel; he sent his revised draft to Pascal Covici his editor at Viking later in December. The Moon Is Down as a novel appeared in book form in March 1942. Written in the years after his enormous success with The Grapes of Wrath The Wayward Bus brings Steinbeck's vision wonderfully to life in an imaginative and unsentimental chronicle of a bus traveling California's back roads transporting the lost and the lonely the good and the greedy the stupid and the scheming the beautiful and the vicious away from their shattered dreams and possibly toward the promise of the future. It was the basis for the 1957 film starring Jayne Mansfield Joan Collins Dan Dailey and Rick Jason. The Viking Press hardcover
1930réf. 8465EN.p: n.p n.d. c. 1930’s. Both approximately 3” x 5”. One photo is of John and Gwen Steinbeck holding hands striking a campy pose - she glancing dreamily off into the distance wearing a hat with a single extremely tall feather sticking straight up and he staring directly into the camera seemingly suppressing a grin wearing a now old-fashioned leather football helmet. The other is equally amusing with Gwen standing on a stone wall arm held high pointing dramatically into the sky while John has come up beside her and is taking liberties with the hem of her dress lifting it up and staring at her revealed legs. Both are blind stamped ‘JOHN STEINBECK’. Fine. n.p hardcover
