The warm and funny story of the inhabitants of Cannery Row in Monterey California. Steinbeck dedicated the book to his close friend Ed Ricketts upon whom he modeled Doc the central character of the novel. CANNERY ROW is a unique blend of lighthearted humor scientific detachment and tender empathy. Rather than featuring a strict plot it paints a vibrant affectionate portrait of a Depression-era Monterey street and its community of social outcasts. Unlike Steinbeck's darker tragedy-driven epics like The Grapes of Wrath this work is largely episodic written as a series of interconnected vignettes. Viking hardcover
