1938réf. 25825New York:: Viking Press 1938. First Printing of the First US Edition. First Printing. A Near Fine copy with the usual age darkening to the front pastedown in a Very Good plus unclipped dust jacket with gentle wear to the extremities and a short closed edge tear at the head of the spine. A collectible copy of this collection of classic Steinbeck fiction. This volume of stories collected with the encouragement of his longtime editor Pascal Covici serves as a wonderful introduction to the work of Nobel Prize winner John Steinbeck. Set in the beautiful Salinas Valley of California where simple people farm the land and struggle to find a place for themselves in the world these stories reflect Steinbeck’s characteristic interests: the tensions between town and country laborers and owners past and present. Included here are the O. Henry Prize-winning story “The Murder”; “The Chrysanthemums” perhaps Steinbeck’s most challenging story both personally and artistically; “Flight” “The Snake” “The White Quail” and the classic tales of “The Red Pony.” Viking Press, unknown
1935réf. 25831New York:: Covici Friede 1935. 4th Issue of the First Edition. A Very Good plus copy with some light foxing to the boards in Very Good unclipped dust jacket with chipping to the head & foot of the spine a small damp spot near bottom of spine and a closed tear. Previous owner name on front jacket flap. A very uncommon copy of Steinbeck's uncommon second book in a very collectible state. "The Pastures of Heaven" is a short story cycle consisting of twelve interconnected stories about a valley the Corral de Tierra in Monterey California which was discovered by a Spanish corporal while chasing runaway Indian slaves. Enchanted by the valley's natural beauty the corporal names it Las Pasturas del Cielo or "The Pastures of Heaven." The stories are written in classic Steinbeck style; the lives of the families that relocate to the valley are portrayed with a mixture of humor and poignancy. A recurring theme in the book is the pain caused when people try ineptly to help or to please others. The text sheets for this 4th issue are from the original 2500 sets printed by Brewer Warren & Putnam for the 1932 First Edition of this title of which only 1000 sets were bound and only 650 copies sold. BW&P sold the remaining 1850 sets to Robert Ballou in 1932 who published approximately 1000 sets in 1932. Of the 850 remaining original printed sets Ballou published an undetermined number of copies in the third issue. That number was probably in the 500 copies range and in 1935 Ballow sold the remaining copies 350 to Covici Friede and this 4th issue appeared in 1935. Covici, Friede, hardcover

FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request - IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - Flawless copy brand new pristine never opened -- 176 pp. ; 113 illus. -- with a bonus offer--; Ken and Melanie Light have embarked on a photographic and literary exploration of a region known for its agricultural plenty--and the marginalization of its people. In Valley of Shadows and Dreams they dig deep into the harsh truths of farm workers' daily experience revealing a deep sense of anger and betrayal toward the destructive legacies of politics bureaucracy and control. The Lights show us once-viable farmland transformed into neighborhoods full of empty tract homes that no workers can afford. We are confonted head-on with the devastating results of foreclosure. We stand in the Community Center food line in Mendota we slip magically onto a midnight dance floor with migrant workers in Tulare and we sail out across the San Joaquin River on a rope swing. These photos and stories capture scenes of hardworking people fighting to preserve their livelihoods and traditions. With an introduction by Thomas Steinbeck and impassioned essays by Melanie Light about the importance of recognizing and rectifying the cycle of employers oppressing workers Valley of Shadows and Dreams uncovers the realities of life in this troubled but vital region that are often hidden and difficult to capture. . 2012. 1597141720 . Octavo. 317 pp. Illustrated throughout by Ruth Gannett. Original oatmeal cloth lettered in blue top edge stained blue; in the first-issue dust jacket. First-issue points present: the Van Rees Press credit at the foot of the copyright page with no later-printing indication; and — the point most often missing — Steinbeck's biography on the rear jacket flap which later printings replaced with blurbs. Front-flap price $2.50 unclipped. Goldstone & Payne A4b the trade edition one of 4000 copies. Housed in a custom clamshell box with gilt lettering to a white leather spine. Fine in a very good-plus dust jacket; some fading to the spine two short tape reinforcements to the verso two small chips and a short closed tear at the lower front edge. The book that made Steinbeck. Three earlier books had passed largely unnoticed; this one — a loose comic chronicle of the paisanos of Monterey framed as a sly retelling of Arthurian legend with Danny and his friends as the knights — became his first real critical and commercial success. The trade edition ran 4000 copies and far fewer survive in their original first-issue jackets. A fine copy in a strong first-issue jacket — with Steinbeck's biography intact on the rear flap — housed in a custom clamshell box is the form in which collectors want this book. Very good in a very good unclipped dust jacket: light foxing to the covers and offsetting to the inner covers; the jacket complete with wear and small chips to the spine ends and some darkening to the rear panel. Steinbeck wrote The Forgotten Village as the screenplay for Herbert Kline's 1941 docufiction film — a project he pursued specifically to make a picture outside the Hollywood studio system drawing on his deep engagement with Mexico. The film follows Juan Diego a boy in a remote mountain village as modern medicine arrives in conflict with traditional practice. Signed copies of The Forgotten Village are uncommon; the title-page signature here is clean and unobtrusive. SKU TO-2026-019 Viking hardcover

Dark brown buckram spine over brown cloth boards with a cream paper title label to the front cover; without dust jacket as issued. ISBN 0-912109-10-6. Goldstone & Payne C120 for the 1955 Holiday original. A fine copy. The first separate book-form appearance of Steinbeck's Holiday magazine essay on his birthplace published in June 1955 as part of the magazine's series in which American writers reflected on the towns of their childhood. Steinbeck had finished East of Eden three years earlier and the essay carries the same complicated feeling for Salinas that runs through the novel — fond exact and unsparing at once. He summons the Salinas of his own boyhood in the 1900s and 1910s and traces the town forward into the post-war agricultural city. Opuscula Press a small Florida imprint that reissued fugitive Steinbeck material produced this hand-bound edition "as a service to Steinbeck collectors." It remains one of the more attractive small-press Steinbeck productions uncommon on the market and sought by collectors building deep California shelves. SKU TO-2026-035 Opuscula Press hardcover
