2002ref. 2341399New York: Penguin Books 2002. Reprint. Trade Paperback. Fine. 5x1x8. New. Reprint. An exceptional copy. 2002 Trade Paperback. 455 pp. The Pulitzer Prize-winning epic of the Great Depression a book that galvanized - and sometimes outraged - millions of readers. First published in 1939 Steinbeck's Pulitzer Prize-winning epic of the Great Depression chronicles the Dust Bowl migration of the 1930s and tells the story of one Oklahoma farm family the Joads - driven from their homestead and forced to travel west to the promised land of California. Out of their trials and their repeated collisions against the hard realities of an America divided into Haves and Have-Nots evolves a drama that is intensely human yet majestic in its scale and moral vision elemental yet plainspoken tragic but ultimately stirring in its human dignity. A portrait of the conflict between the powerful and the powerless of one man's fierce reaction to injustice and of one woman's stoical strength the novel captures the horrors of the Great Depression and probes into the very nature of equality and justice in America. At once a naturalistic epic captivity narrative road novel and transcendental gospel Steinbeck's powerful landmark novel is perhaps the most American of American Classics. This Centennial edition specially designed to commemorate one hundred years of Steinbeck features french flaps and deckle-edged pages. Penguin Books paperback books

Boards rubbed and soiled with fading of gilt titles. 1947 Hard Cover. 312 pp. Original red cloth gilt titles blind-stamped bus on front board. The Wayward Bus is a novel by American author John Steinbeck originally published in 1947. The novel contains several references to the recent Second World War and America's attempts to adjust to life in the immediate postwar era. No single character dominates The Wayward Bus. The viewpoint shifts frequently from one character to another often taking the form of internal monologue so that we are experiencing a given character's thoughts. Much of the novel's length is simply devoted to establishing and delineating the various characters. This novel takes place firmly within "Steinbeck country": most of the narrative occurs at Rebel Corners a crossroads 42 miles south of San Ysidro California. Although considered one of Steinbeck's weaker novels at the time of its original publication The Wayward Bus was financially more successful than any of his previous works.
