Lengthily signed by the author and also initialed on the half-title “by an author in 1 Act. John Steinbeck a walking mouse who dances from man to mouse J.S.” Steinbeck adapted his celebrated 1937 novel for the stage the same year and the play opened on Broadway that November. From the library of Otis L. Guernsey Jr. 1918-2001 the distinguished American drama and film critic and for more than three decades editor of the Best Plays theatre yearbook. Guernsey spent nineteen years at the New York Herald Tribune rising from copy boy to become the paper’s film and drama critic and arts editor before taking over the Best Plays series in 1964 and editing some thirty-six annual volumes an unrivaled record of the American stage. As one of the foremost theatre critics of his generation he moved in the same New York literary and theatrical world in which Steinbeck whose novels and plays were mainstays of stage and screen loomed so large. 1947réf. 152794New York: The Viking Press 1947. First edition of this classic story of simplicity based on a Mexican folk tale. Octavo original brown cloth stamped in black and gilt top stain faded green. Near fine in a good dust jacket with a closed tear to the front panel and Steinbeck looking to the left on the rear panel. Drawings by Jose Clemente Orozco. The Pearl 1947 is a novella by John Steinbeck the Nobel Prize-winning author of The Grapes of Wrath and East of Eden. A story of classic simplicity based on a Mexican folk tale The Pearl explores the secrets of man's nature the darkest depths of evil and the luminous possibilities of love. Steinbeck first encountered the Mexican folk tale on which it is based during a marine biology expedition to the Sea of Cortez in 1940. He originally conceived it as a film script before expanding it into a short story published in Woman's Home Companion in 1945 as "The Pearl of the World." The novella follows Kino a poor pearl diver in La Paz Mexico whose discovery of an enormous pearl promises escape from poverty but ultimately destroys everything he loves. The story functions as a parable about greed materialism and the corrupting influence of wealth. The Viking Press hardcover
