Steinbeck's third novel set among a small band of paisanos in Monterey California in the aftermath of World War I. "The story of Danny and his paisano friends in Monterery is a satire on the Arthurian knights of the round table. On a deeper level it is a tragedy a defense of the non-conformist personality and a statement that what does not change will surely die applies to societies as well as individuals" Baird 2341. The novel was Steinbeck's first critical and commercial success basis for Victor Fleming's 1942 film adaptation starring Spencer Tracy Hedy Lamarr and John Garfield. 1935réf. TO-2026-016Covici Friede 1935. First edition first issue. Cloth. STEINBECK John. Tortilla Flat. FIRST EDITION FIRST ISSUE. New York: Covici-Friede 1935. Octavo. 317 pp. Illustrated throughout by Ruth Gannett. Original oatmeal cloth lettered in blue top edge stained blue; in the first-issue dust jacket. First-issue points present: the Van Rees Press credit at the foot of the copyright page with no later-printing indication; and — the point most often missing — Steinbeck's biography on the rear jacket flap which later printings replaced with blurbs. Front-flap price $2.50 unclipped. Goldstone & Payne A4b the trade edition one of 4000 copies. Housed in a custom clamshell box with gilt lettering to a white leather spine. Fine in a very good-plus dust jacket; some fading to the spine two short tape reinforcements to the verso two small chips and a short closed tear at the lower front edge. The book that made Steinbeck. Three earlier books had passed largely unnoticed; this one — a loose comic chronicle of the paisanos of Monterey framed as a sly retelling of Arthurian legend with Danny and his friends as the knights — became his first real critical and commercial success. The trade edition ran 4000 copies and far fewer survive in their original first-issue jackets. A fine copy in a strong first-issue jacket — with Steinbeck's biography intact on the rear flap — housed in a custom clamshell box is the form in which collectors want this book. 1950réf. 29609New York:: Grosset & Dunlap 1950s. Reprint Edition. A Very Good copy with previous owner inscription in brown cloth binding in a Very Good illustrated dust jacket with wear to the spine ends. Adopting the structure and themes of the Arthurian legend John Steinbeck created a "Camelot" on a shabby hillside above the town of Monterey California and peopled it with a colorful band of knights. At the center of the tale is Danny whose house like Arthur's castle becomes a gathering place for men looking for adventure camaraderie and a sense of belonging—men who fiercely resist the corrupting tide of honest toil and civil rectitude. Steinbeck chronicles their deeds—their multiple lovers their wonderful brawls their Rabelaisian wine-drinking—he spins a tale as compelling and ultimately as touched by sorrow as the famous legends of the Round Table which inspired him.
