1945réf. 8070New York: The Viking Press 1945. First edition. Fine/Near Fine. Second issue in the canary yellow cloth. A Fine copy in Near Fine dust jacket. A lovely copy of the book. Contemporary ink ownership signature to upper free endpaper. Dust jacket with some chipping to edges and to one fold. Jacket spine a bit darkened and some dustsoiling to edges of flaps but presenting very well. Overall a bright and appealing copy of Steinbeck's celebrated novel about the Cannery Row community of Monterey California. Steinbeck's straightforward prose follows the trials and tribulations of the Cannery Row community in Great Depression-era Monterey. The novel begins with a singular focus: a group of friends will throw a thank-you party for Doc a marine biologist. But such a venture envelops the larger community and through this larger scope Cannery Row explores friendship community nostalgia and the profound social effects of the Great Depression. Indeed the fame of the novel would help turn Cannery Row into a kind of tourist attraction. Steinbeck had just come home from being a war correspondent and the experience - along with his failing marriage - scarred him considerably. He began this book as kind of an escape both for him and for his readers. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. The Viking Press unknown books

réf. 06574New York: The Viking Press 1945. Advance Issue in Original Wrappers A Pre-Publication Steinbeck of Uncommon Survival STEINBECK John. Cannery Row. New York: The Viking Press 1945. Advance copy preceding the first edition. Octavo 7 3/8 x 4 3/4 inches; 187 x 121 mm. vi 208 1 advertisements 1 blank pp. Publisher's original blue printed wrappers front cover lettered in black. Housed in the original acetate jacket. Spine very slightly darkened minor wear at top of spine otherwise an exceptionally well-preserved near fine copy. A scarce and desirable advance issue of one of Steinbeck's most beloved Monterey novels issued in fragile paper wrappers for pre-publication distribution. Copies retaining the original acetate jacket are particularly uncommon as these ephemeral coverings were seldom preserved. Cannery Row stands among Steinbeck's most warmly regarded works - a loosely structured episodic portrait of life along the Monterey waterfront populated by a cast of unforgettable characters including Doc Mack and the boys. Blending humor pathos and philosophical reflection the novel captures both the camaraderie and quiet desperation of its Depression-era milieu. Advance copies of this title are rare in commerce especially in such superior condition and are keenly sought by collectors for their immediacy to publication and inherent fragility. Advance copy an uncorrected galley proof bound in plain unprinted tannish wrappers printed on rectos only a very scarce advanced state of this minor or not so minor Steinbeck masterpiece whose themes of death and loneliness are masked by its surface layer of humor all the more rare in that this is an Author Presentation Copy Inscribed by Steinbeck to the best man at his second marriage Howard O. Hunter who was the Works Progress Administration WPA commissioner in the early 1940s under the FDR administration Steinbeck and his second wife Gwen Conger were married March 29 1943 just 11 days after receiving his final divorce decree from his first wife Carol Steinbeck has Inscribed the first preliminary as follows "For Howard/who really/belongs in/Cannery Row/John Steinbeck/last night in New York 1944" this galley lacks all the preliminaries found in the 1945 published version such as half titles title page copyright page dedication page etc. although not specifically cited in Goldstone & Payne there is a notation under G&P A22a that "a copy of the unrevised galley proofs is in the Humanities Research Center at the University of Texas" see Morrow 172 that copy with a yellow label on front giving publication date and price that is not on this copy--the Morrow copy was not signed or inscribed now housed in a beautiful custom clamshell case with leather spine laid in loosely is a letter of provenance from Ellen Leonard who was given this proof by Hunter's wife Edna. réf. 06592New York: Covici Friede 1936. Steinbeck's First Book - The Buccaneer Romance of Henry Morgan Cup of Gold - First Covici Friede Edition Using McBride Sheets STEINBECK John. Cup of Gold. A Life of Sir Henry Morgan Buccaneer with Occasional Reference to History. New York: Covici Friede 1936. First Covici Friede edition after the McBride first edition of 1929. Octavo 7 7/16 x 5 1/8 inches; 188 x 130 mm. viii 269 3 blank pp. Publisher's maroon cloth spine lettered in gilt top edge stained blue others uncut. Very slight fading 1/16 inch at lower spine and top edges otherwise fine. In the original first-issue color pictorial dust jacket with only minimal rubbing to extremities. Overall a superb example. Originally published in 1929 Cup of Gold was Steinbeck's first book - a romantic and imaginative re-creation of the life of the Welsh privateer Sir Henry Morgan. Though quite different in tone from the social realism that would later define his reputation the novel reveals early evidence of Steinbeck's narrative power and his fascination with myth ambition and the human condition. This 1936 Covici Friede issue represents the first reappearance of the work following Steinbeck's growing success in the mid-1930s. The edition is bibliographically significant: it utilizes unsold sheets of the original 1929 Robert M. McBride edition newly issued with a Covici Friede title-page and binding. In effect Covici Friede acquired the remaining McBride stock and reissued it under their own imprint. When these sheets were exhausted later printings were produced independently by Covici Friede typically in blue cloth. As such this edition occupies an important transitional position between the exceedingly rare McBride first issue and the later more common reprints. Copies in such fresh condition particularly with the fragile and vividly illustrated dust jacket intact are increasingly scarce. A particularly attractive and bibliographically interesting example of Steinbeck's elusive first book. Goldstone & Payne A1c. New York: Covici Friede, 1936 unknown books
