1945réf. CanneryRow1stCannery Row by John Steinbeck author of The Grapes of Wrath Of Mice and Men and East of Eden Hardcover First Edition - First Printing - Second State Binding - First State Dust Jacket Viking 1945. $2.00 cover price inside front dust jacket flap. First Printing since there is NO subsequent printing information on the copyright page. Second state canary yellow boards with blue lines and lettering on the front and spine. NOT to be confused with the wartime edition in blue boards. see edition information below Fine- in Near Fine unrestored Dust Jacket. A really nice exceptional copy in dust jacket. The book itself is just about fine with very clean pages. Dust jacket is quite clean and bright at the front and does NOT have any major tears. Typical edge-wear top and bottom spine and rubbing and nicks to the same and at the corners and some typical soiling to the back of the dust jacket. Overall a very clean and presentable first edition copy of one of the half-dozen major works of Steinbeck. Note on edition/state: The first edition/first printing of this book appeared in two states both released simultaneously. The first state has been determined to be buff-colored somewhat tan-like boards while the second state is canary yellow. Apparently during production the printers ran out of the buff/tan materials for the boards and to meet the publishing deadline yellow colored materials were brought in and used for the rest of the print-run. Purists collectors will contest the buff-colored boards are the most preferable. However they really represent at best simply two states of the first printing not two printings as further printings would be indicated subsequently because the book was popular since copies of both states were released simultaneously in 1945. At the time buyers would have had about a 50-50 chance of purchasing either the buff or yellow boards of these copies. Typically first state copies of the buff-tan variety in near fine or better dust jackets are priced at $2000 while the yellow boards as offered here can be had for a fraction of the price. Everything else the pages the dust jacket price etc are the same. As a collector I am more interested in the condition of the dust jacket rather than whether the boards are first or second state. Shortly thereafter a so-called wartime edition was issued in blue boards. The wartime edition while a good reading copy has essentially almost no premium value on the collectors market. NOTE: All modern books with dust jackets come with dust jacket covers. ALSO: The pictures are of the actual item for sale. The pictures are NOT stock photos. Viking hardcover

1971réf. 213071971. Simmen Edward editor. The Chicano: From Caricature to Self-Portrait 1971 traces changing literary portrayals of Mexican Americans from externally imposed stereotypes to fiction grounded in Chicano experience and authorship. Published during the Chicano Movement's assertion of political cultural and linguistic identity the anthology brings Anglo and Mexican American writers into deliberate comparison allowing readers to examine how narrative authority affects portrayals of ethnicity labor family discrimination assimilation and community. Its organizing movement from "caricature" to "self-portrait" makes the volume particularly useful for studying representation in American literature and the growing visibility of Chicano voices within the national publishing market. Simmen Edward ed. The Chicano: From Caricature to Self-Portrait. New York: New American Library 1971. First edition. English language. The collection presents short fiction spanning different periods and authorial perspectives including work by John Steinbeck Jack London Ray Bradbury Nick C. Vaca Philip D. Ortega and Genaro González. Simmen's introduction frames the selections around what the publisher described as the "pain and promise of the Mexican-American experience" while the anthology's structure permits comparison between depictions created by writers outside the community and narratives in which Chicano authors define their own characters environments and cultural values. The volume also includes a selected bibliography of short fiction extending its usefulness as an early guide to Mexican American literary study. One volume. 318 pages. Paperback in orange-toned printed wrappers. Octavo. The anthology appeared amid a broader renaissance of Chicano cultural pride and political organization associated with figures and movements addressing farm labor educational inequality land rights and community self-determination. Simmen's editorial arrangement places literary representation within that contemporary struggle over who possessed the authority to describe Mexican American life. Rather than treating all selections as equally authentic the book exposes the historical progression from sentimentalized or derogatory types toward narratives shaped by Chicano memory language and social experience. Light wear to wrapper edges and corners visible spine creasing without loss of structural integrity light page toning and a small crease at the upper-right corner of the front wrapper; contents otherwise unmarked. Very good. An important Chicano Movement-era anthology documenting the transition from outsider representation to Mexican American literary self-definition. unknown

A Near Fine book in a Very Good or better dust jacket. This copy is in near fine condition with a square tight binding gold lettering over clean maroon boards and clean white pages with only a hint of foxing throughout; the book does show some light rubbing and sunning to the top board edges and a mild gutter exposure to the first few pages else fine. Housed in a clean and bright very good or better dust jacket that shows some moderate sunning to the spine mild rubbing and chipping to the spine ends edges and corners and a couple of short closed tears to the top of the front and back panels. Overall a very handsome and presentable copy of the book with a very clean and legible signature from Steinbeck with the added provenance of the original signee's name written in.
