In original oatmeal cloth covered boards and a first state first edition jacket with the "first edition" slug on bottom of front flap and correct $2.75 price on top of front flap. CONDITION: NEAR FINE/VERY GOOD The book is in NEAR FINE vintage condition. Minimal rubbing to extremities. Coffee stain on top edge which has dripped to rear endpapers and a little foxing and waviness to first few pages else FINE. The exceptional qualities: 1. Front endpapers with no darkening very scarce and very little darkening of rear endpaper gutters. 2. No writing no stamps no ex libris marks no dog-eared pages. 3. Very few signs of handling. 4. Very clean colorful and unfaded cloth. 5. Clean and bright pages. The original unrestored first state dust jacket is in VERY GOOD condition. Clipped panels via publisher as are all copies. Sun-darkened spine per usual. Front panel creases. Rubbing to folds. Edge wear chipping small tears and creases. Three larger chips along front fold head of rear fold and head of spine. CONDITION REPORT The book is in FINE vintage condition. Square spine firm hinges and joints sharp corners. Clean bright pages. No writing or ex libris marks. No bent page corners. Minimal rubbing or signs of handling beyond a few negligible spots and a little darkening to the foot of cloth turn-ins. Still beautifully FINE. The unrestored dust jacket is NEAR FINE. Colorful and vivid. No tears. Some spots of rubbing to spine and foot of front panel and some light edge wear else FINE. All flap corners clipped as with all copies by the publisher. EXCEPTIONAL QUALITIES 1. Unrubbed spine tips. 2. Remarkably without the usual darkening of the endpaper gutters quite scarce. 3. Very clean colorful and unfaded cloth and without the foxing which often afflicts this title. 4. Without the nearly universal darkening of the jacket spine. It also has a mistake on the copyright page stating that it was 1939 by John Steinbeck not 1937. 1939 was the initial Sun Dial edition. Brown boards edgeworn.
