1940rif. 140948733New York: The Limited Editions Club 1940. Limited Edition. Fine. Limited edition in two volumes #517 of 1146 copies. Signed by the illustrator on the colophon. xxii 2 284; 285-559 1 pp. Bound in publisher's "grass cloth" stamped in brown over quarter rawhide lettered in silver all edges stained yellow pictorial endpapers. Very light soiling to textblock edges else Fine. Binding very square and tight; spines never opened. Housed in the original brown paper-covered slipcase moderately chipped and worn. A beautiful unread set made with great care. Two publisher's slips laid in explain that the book's binding was designed to inspire "emotional sympathy" in the reader before he had even cracked it open: "The 'grass cloth' should if the intention of the designer is realized put the prospective reader in mind of of the parched sun-baked grass of the Dust Bowl. Silver is used for the stamping rather than gold because this is a novel about people in 'the silver country.' And rawhide was planned for the backs of the volumes because it is a leather which might very well have come from an Oklahoman steer." The book's contents are enhanced with duotone lithographs by Thomas Hart Benton a painter and muralist in the vanguard of the Regionalist art movement. Benton was also commissioned to create lithographs to help promote the critically acclaimed film adaption that appeared the same year; his style of populist realism was acknowledged to be a perfect match for Steinbeck's. Much of Steinbeck's work employs settings in his native central California. In 1930 Steinbeck met the marine biologist EDWARD RICKETTS 1897-1948 who became a close friend and mentor to Steinbeck during the following decade teaching him a great deal about philosophy and biology. Ricketts operated a biological lab on the coast of Monterey selling biological samples of small animals fish rays starfish turtles and other marine forms to schools and colleges. Between 1930 and 1936 Steinbeck and Ricketts became close friends and Steinbeck's wife Carol began working at the lab as secretary-bookkeeper. Steinbeck had already published The Grapes of Wrath and Of Mice and Men when he co-authored Sea of Cortez with Ricketts. A narrative of a biological expedition in the Gulf of California the work combines scientific observations with personal reflections drawing parallels between human and marine life. Over 550 species are described that in retrospect reveal that ecological disruptions had already affected the Gulf by 1940. Ricketts who died in 1948 was inspiration for the character of "Doc" in Steinbeck's Cannery Row published in 1945. Steinbeck won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1962. Viking Press hardcover books

1935rif. 41022New York: Covici Friede Publishers 1935. First printing. Near fine in very good plus dust jacket. First edition of this oft-comical tale of post-World War I Monterey following the exploits of a wine-loving and vaguely Arthurian group of paisanos a beautiful copy in the scarce original dust jacket. The lighthearted tone of TORTILLA FLAT lifted the spirits of Americans during the Great Depression for whom "reading and the movies were escape. escape from grinding poverty escape from worrying about how to pay the rent escape from worrying about how to find a job" San Jose. Danny and his round table of friends are rarely concerned with any of those issues as they meander through life in Monterey undeniably poor but not experiencing the tragedy of poverty in the same way as many of Steinbeck's later characters. Steinbeck even drew joy from writing the work: "it is light and I think amusing. I don't care whether it amounts to anything. I am enjoying it and I need something to help me over this last ditch" Steinbeck and Wallsten. TORTILLA FLAT did of course amount to something earning the California Commonwealth Club's Gold Medal and a mention in the justification for Steinbeck's 1962 Nobel Prize. It was also made into a 1942 film starring Spencer Tracy and Hedy Lamarr and was one of the top box office grossers of the year. This first edition is a crystallization of the beginning of Steinbeck's career before his works were required reading in classrooms across America. With Ruth Gannett's illustrations nestled throughout the text TORTILLA FLAT is a refreshingly light title in a broad oeuvre. 7.5'' x 5''. Original tan cloth binding with blue spine lettering. Original unclipped $2.50 pictorial dust jacket in blue and black. Blue topstain. Fore-edge machine deckle. Illustrated throughout in black and white. 318 pages. Housed in custom blue leather-backed clamshell box. Jacket with some edgewear mild chipping to spine ends; spine sunned. Binding corners and spine ends lightly bumped topstain a bit faded; tiny creases to lower margins of pages 316-318. A clean sound copy. Covici Friede Publishers unknown books

rif. 06590New York: The Viking Press 1948. Steinbeck in the Soviet Union - Words and Images by Two Masters A Russian Journal - With Photographs by Robert Capa STEINBECK John. A Russian Journal. With photographs by Robert Capa. New York: The Viking Press 1948. First edition first printing. Quarto 9 3/8 x 6 1/2 inches; 239 x 165 mm. iv 1-2 3-220 pp. Numerous photogravure illustrations throughout. Publisher's quarter yellow linen over light green buckram boards front cover and spine lettered in blue top edge stained blue. In the original color pictorial dust jacket. A fine copy in a fine dust jacket. A remarkable collaboration between John Steinbeck and the legendary war photographer Robert Capa A Russian Journal records their 1947 journey through the Soviet Union at the dawn of the Cold War. Determined to present an unfiltered view of everyday life the two set out to observe rather than interpret offering a rare and humanizing portrait of postwar Russia at a moment of deep geopolitical tension. Capa's photographs - direct unsentimental and often quietly powerful - perfectly complement Steinbeck's restrained and observant prose. Together they create one of the most compelling documentary works of the period notable for its refusal to conform to prevailing ideological narratives on either side. An unusually fine copy of a book seldom found in such pristine condition particularly in its original dust jacket. A cornerstone collaboration appealing equally to collectors of Steinbeck and of twentieth-century photography. Goldstone & Payne A29a. New York: The Viking Press, 1948 unknown books
