1950réf. STBUVI50First edition. A fine copy. The dust jacket all but fine only with minor creasing a slight trace of abrasion at the rear flap and unessential tape reinforcement along the edges of the verso. An outstanding copy overall presented in custom velvet-lined clamshell box from Asprey. One of Steinbeck s most ambitious works in which he experimented with writing a play in the format of a novel. 1950réf. MOD12-D-10New York: The Viking Press 1950. First edition. Cloth. Very Good/Good. 8" by 5.5". None. The first edition of this novel from Pulitzer winner John Steinbeck. First edition first printing. 'Burning Bright' was written as an experiment with producing a play in novel format. Rather than providing only the dialogue and brief stage directions as would be expected in a play Steinbeck fleshes out the scenes with details of both the characters and the environment. The intention was to allow the play to be read by the non-theatrical reader while still allowing the dialogue to be lifted and performed with little adaptation by acting companies. In a grey cloth binding with original unclipped dustwrapper. Externally generally smart with just some slight shelfwear. Dustwrapper is sound though with some edgewear and handling marks. Internally firmly bound. Ink signature to front free-endpaper. Pages are generally bright and clean aside from a few patches of foxing. Very Good The Viking Press hardcover

Goldstone & Payne A29aThe form of this book is a "play-novelette" which is a play that is easy to read or a short novel that can be played. Steinbeck used this method experimentally in "Of Mice and Men" and "The Moon is Down" but this book is a more complete attempt at this form. While this book was not critically acclaimed Steinbeck as always is a very vivid writer and bring his four characters to life in this play concerned with the timeless themes of love jealousy friendship and the desire to have a child The Viking Press hardcover
1950réf. 13127New York: Viking Press 1950. First edition. 8vo full grey cloth lettered in red on upper cover and spine in dustjacket. 159. A bright clean and unusually nice copy. In the Foreword Steinbeck writes his reasons for writing in this format - play-novellette: "I find it difficult to read plays and in this I do not find myself alone. The printed play is read almost exclusively by people closely associated with the theater by students of the theater and by the comparatively small group of readers who are passionately fond of the theater. .this will be more widely read because it is presented as ordinary fiction. réf. 06580New York: The Viking Press 1950. Experiment in Form - Play and Novel Intertwined A Dramatic Steinbeck Unusual and Underappreciated STEINBECK John. Burning Bright. A Play in Story Form. New York: The Viking Press 1950. First edition. Octavo 7 3/8 x 4 3/4 inches; 187 x 121 mm. 1-8 9-159 1 blank pp. Publisher's gray cloth front cover and spine lettered in red top edge stained red. Original color printed dust jacket spine faded with the lightest rubbing to extremities. A fine copy in an excellent dust jacket. An intriguing hybrid work in which Steinbeck deliberately blurs the boundaries between drama and prose fiction. Conceived for both stage and page Burning Bright presents a symbolic almost mythic narrative centered on themes of masculinity identity and the desire for legacy. Though less commercially successful than his major novels the work represents a bold formal experiment reflecting Steinbeck's continued willingness to challenge conventional narrative structures.
