Steinbeck's third novel set among a small band of paisanos in Monterey California in the aftermath of World War I. "The story of Danny and his paisano friends in Monterery is a satire on the Arthurian knights of the round table. On a deeper level it is a tragedy a defense of the non-conformist personality and a statement that what does not change will surely die applies to societies as well as individuals" Baird 2341. 1950réf. 29609New York:: Grosset & Dunlap 1950s. Reprint Edition. A Very Good copy with previous owner inscription in brown cloth binding in a Very Good illustrated dust jacket with wear to the spine ends. Adopting the structure and themes of the Arthurian legend John Steinbeck created a "Camelot" on a shabby hillside above the town of Monterey California and peopled it with a colorful band of knights. At the center of the tale is Danny whose house like Arthur's castle becomes a gathering place for men looking for adventure camaraderie and a sense of belonging—men who fiercely resist the corrupting tide of honest toil and civil rectitude. Steinbeck chronicles their deeds—their multiple lovers their wonderful brawls their Rabelaisian wine-drinking—he spins a tale as compelling and ultimately as touched by sorrow as the famous legends of the Round Table which inspired him. The book was modeled on the Arthurian legends of knights of Camelot a story that had seized Steinbeck's imagination since he had been a child. Tortilla Flat was the first book Steinbeck wrote that received both warm reviews and good sales and was referenced by the Swedish Academy when Steinbeck was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962. It was also adapted into a 1942 film starring Spencer Tracy and Hedy Lamarr. "Mr. Steinbeck tells a number of first rate stories in his history of Danny's house. He has a gift for drollery and for turning Spanish talk and phrases into a gently mocking English. The book is consistently amusing." contemporary New York Times review. réf. 06568New York: The Viking Press 1947. A Landmark American Novel in Its First Illustrated Dress With Seventeen Evocative Paintings by Peggy Worthington STEINBECK John. Tortilla Flat. With seventeen paintings by Peggy Worthington. New York: The Viking Press 1947. First illustrated edition. Large octavo 9 3/16 x 6 5/8 inches; 234 x 168 mm. 1-10 11-213 3 blank pp. Seventeen fine color illustrations including nine full-page plates. Publisher's tan linen over boards front cover with a mounted color illustration spine lettered in dark green pictorial color endpapers top edge stained dark green. A fine copy in the original color pictorial dust jacket. A beautifully produced illustrated edition of Tortilla Flat one of John Steinbeck's earliest and most enduring works. First published in 1935 Tortilla Flat marked Steinbeck's breakthrough introducing the loosely connected adventures of Danny and his companions - paisanos living on the margins of society in Monterey California. Blending humor pathos and a gently ironic narrative voice the work established many of the thematic concerns - friendship poverty and moral ambiguity - that would define Steinbeck's later masterpieces. Peggy Worthington's illustrations created specifically for this edition bring a warm painterly interpretation to Steinbeck's world capturing both the rustic charm and underlying poignancy of the paisanos' lives. Her use of color and composition lends the volume a distinctive visual identity making this edition one of the most appealing mid-century illustrated Steinbeck publications. Issued in an attractive format with mounted cover illustration and pictorial endpapers this 1947 edition represents the first fully illustrated presentation of the text and remains highly sought after in fine condition with the dust jacket intact. A particularly fresh and desirable copy of an American classic - uniting Steinbeck's breakthrough novel with a sympathetic and accomplished illustrative program. Goldstone & Payne A4a. réf. 06581New York: Covici Friede 1935. Steinbeck's Breakthrough - The Rare Wrappered Issue A Likely Advance Issue One of Approximately 500 Copies STEINBECK John. Tortilla Flat. Illustrated by Ruth Gannett. New York: Covici Friede 1935. First edition wrappered issue of the author's first commercially successful novel. Octavo 7 1/2 x 5 1/4 inches; 191 x 133 mm. i-iv v-vi vii-viii 9-316 1 3 blank pp. Publisher's original sewn pictorial wrappers printed in blue. Spine darkened with a tiny chip at the foot and a short 1 1/2 inch split at the top of the front joint. Preserved in the likely original glassine wrapper. A very good well-preserved example of this fragile and elusive issue. Chemised in a blue cloth folder and housed in a quarter dark blue morocco slipcase spine with five raised bands ruled and lettered in gilt in compartments. The rare wrappered issue of Tortilla Flat produced in a small limitation - generally estimated at approximately 500 copies - at the time of first publication. Though bibliographers Goldstone and Payne note that there is no conclusive evidence that this issue precedes the standard cloth binding it has long been regarded in the trade as an advance or trial issue likely intended for early distribution review or promotional purposes. Fragile by nature and seldom encountered in presentable condition copies retaining their original glassine are particularly scarce. This issue marks the turning point in Steinbeck's career: Tortilla Flat established both his reputation and his distinctive narrative voice paving the way for In Dubious Battle 1936 and The Grapes of Wrath 1939. A desirable and increasingly difficult Steinbeck issue especially in unrestored condition. New York: Covici Friede, 1935 unknown
